Women in Architecture

While architecture is one of history’s oldest professions, women have only been part of the picture for about a century. Women have been proving their passion for architecture in a male-dominated profession yet the society has been challenging their role in the industry.

The buildings designed by female leads have a different design process to it. Some female architects have executed extraordinary building designs but they are in minority. We need to bring a majority of women into the light for people to know them and how they have brought up new opportunities to design fields by breaking the stereotypes.

The call is thus, to infuse feminism, amplify them, write about them, support them and be more open to them.

Questions

  1. What are some of the important contributions of women architects in the world?

Women have served as patrons, architects, engineers, managers, and muses; they have acted as key figures on the construction of buildings both large and small. What are some of these important contributions that you can recollect and share with the community?

  1. List a few hurdles which every female architect goes through? And how can we empathize and get past them?

During the initial stages as an architect, every woman goes through a very difficult time, finding their niche or their podium in this ‘mostly’ patriarchal profession (such as unequal pay and so on).

  1. What is the impact of gender in practicing and in the kind of spaces that arise?

Gender gap has been prevailing in various fields for a long time. How has it been overcome? What is its impact in the architecture and design profession?
