Alloa Hills Weekend Home by Studio Sangath: A Contemporary Courtyard House Design in India
A modern courtyard house in India offering a nature-immersed retreat with terracotta textures, passive cooling, and serene spatial flow.
A Peaceful Retreat Rooted in Nature
Located in Mubarakpur near the Sabarmati River, the Alloa Hills Weekend Home by Studio Sangath is a contemporary interpretation of traditional courtyard house design in India. Designed for a couple engaged in micro-financing initiatives in rural communities, the residence functions not only as a weekend sanctuary but also as a creative haven for artists, writers, and filmmakers.

The house invites tranquility through its sensitive integration with the undulating landscape, offering immersive views and a profound connection with nature. At its heart lies an open-air courtyard, which becomes the anchor of experience—spatially, thermally, and emotionally.

The Courtyard as a Living Core
The architectural concept revolves around the courtyard, a timeless Indian typology that fosters natural ventilation, filters light, and creates inward-focused spatiality. At Alloa Hills, this central void extends into a terrace that doubles as a stage or a stargazing platform, blending indoor and outdoor life seamlessly.

This inner courtyard is not just a passive space but a performative one. Morning light filters gently into living areas, while the western sun is reflected inward through the courtyard, setting up a dynamic rhythm of light and shadow throughout the day. It is a house that breathes with the land.

Verandahs and Passive Cooling Strategies
Flanking either side of the home, deep verandahs serve as environmental moderators. These shaded transition zones buffer interior spaces from the region's intense sun and monsoon rains. When opened up, the house transforms into a pavilion-like structure, allowing breezes to pass through and cool the interiors naturally.

These verandahs also become extensions of daily life—spaces for reflection, conversation, and interaction with the landscape. The architectural language, though minimal and earthy, enhances the experience of openness without sacrificing comfort or intimacy.

A Unified Material Palette of Terracotta
Materiality plays a critical role in reinforcing the spatial narrative. Terracotta—in the form of bricks, pigmented concrete, and flooring—emerges as the unifying element that grounds the project. Its natural warmth and texture support a cohesive aesthetic that flows uninterrupted from indoor to outdoor, enhancing the tactile quality of the built form.

This consistent material palette not only evokes regional vernacular traditions but also ensures that the home ages gracefully with time, resonating with the surrounding terrain and climate.

A Home for Contemplation and Creative Exchange
The Alloa Hills Weekend Home offers more than a physical retreat—it creates a space for intellectual exchange and creative solitude. By blurring boundaries between architecture and landscape, the home offers artists and guests moments of stillness and inspiration. It’s a dwelling that quietly encourages deep engagement with the senses, the seasons, and one's inner life.

Studio Sangath has redefined the courtyard house design in India for a contemporary audience—balancing climate sensitivity, spatial generosity, and the poetic potential of simple materials. The result is a multi-sensory environment of light, shade, breeze, and silence.
