Terracotta Breath House by live out studio – Multigenerational Home in Da Nang, Vietnam
Terracotta Breath House by live out studio is a multigenerational, sustainable Vietnamese home, blending brick, timber, bamboo, and courtyard-centered tropical design.
Terracotta Breath House, designed by live out studio, is an elegant yet humble multigenerational residence located in a narrow laneway of Da Nang, Vietnam. Completed in 2024 on a modest 241 m² urban plot, this thoughtfully designed home accommodates two households: the parents’ home at the front and the daughter’s home at the rear. A small planted courtyard acts as both separator and connector, bringing light, greenery, and gentle community interaction to daily life.

Design Philosophy – Local Craftsmanship & Passive Design Guided by Vietnamese feng shui principles and executed on a restrained budget, the architecture emphasizes local craftsmanship and passive tropical strategies. The home’s earthy palette of terracotta bricks, bamboo, timber, clay-colored render, and corrugated roofing creates a thermally responsive envelope, harmoniously blending with Da Nang’s dense urban fabric. Every detail—operable brick screens, handwoven rope balustrades, and intricate brickwork—balances humility and sophistication, creating a home that is both practical and poetic.

The Parents’ House – Tradition & Ritual Positioned at the street front, the parents’ house offers a serene sunlit garden as a welcoming pause before entry. The textured brick façade, angled bondings, and pivoting windows maintain privacy while inviting openness. Inside, the first floor flows seamlessly from living to dining to kitchen, directly connecting to the garden for indoor-outdoor living. A sculpted staircase leads to the second-floor prayer room, doubling as a community gathering hall. Reading nooks overlooking the courtyard capture daylight and natural ventilation, while the combination of brick, bamboo, timber, and terracotta wall tiles creates a warm, tactile, and timeless atmosphere.

The Daughter’s House – Flexible & Joyful Living At the rear, the daughter’s home is a model of compact, adaptable living. Designed for a young family, the open-plan layout maximizes every square meter. Large folding windows dissolve the boundary between the interior and courtyard, inviting natural light, greenery, and fresh air. The ground floor integrates living, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom spaces, complemented by built-in storage and multipurpose furniture for evolving family needs. A slender steel staircase with handwoven rope balustrades leads to an upper communal landing for prayer or play. Upstairs, two light-filled bedrooms, ventilated through skylights and narrow windows, remain cool year-round. Strategic design ensures privacy while visually expanding the home’s footprint.

Courtyard & Landscape – Subtle Beauty in Everyday Life The shared courtyard softly links both households, providing sensory richness through minimal landscaping, shifting light, and textured materials. Local bricks, bamboo, timber, and clay render recur throughout, emphasizing subtle natural aesthetics. Terracotta Breath demonstrates how humble materials, mindful design, and local craftsmanship can create a sophisticated, sustainable, and family-centered home.

Terracotta Breath House is more than shelter—it is a testament to multigenerational living, sustainability, and thoughtful Vietnamese architecture. Live Out Studio’s project shows how careful material choice, passive design, and a connection to outdoor spaces can foster a healthy, beautiful, and meaningful daily life.
