Black House by AR Arquitectos: A Bold Expression of Concrete Living in Argentina

The Black House byAR Arquitectos is a striking example of modern residential architecture located in La Calera, Córdoba, Argentina. Designed in 2022, this 550 m² single-family home challenges traditional design norms through its bold use of black concrete, creating a powerful architectural identity rooted in its mountainous terrain.

Concept and Design Approach

Set within the rugged landscape of La Pankana, the project redefines conventional housing by prioritizing material expression and spatial continuity. The architects envisioned a home where concrete becomes the central protagonist, shaping not only the structure but also the sensory experience of the space. This approach aligns with contemporary brutalist architecture, where raw materiality and structural honesty play a defining role.

Spatial Organization and Layout

The house is organized across two levels, composed of parallel overlapping volumes that respond to the sloped site. The ground floor is partially embedded into the terrain, creating a dynamic spatial journey that unfolds gradually. This level hosts the social areas, including the living room, dining area, and kitchen, all seamlessly connected in an open-plan layout.

Large glazed openings enhance transparency and permeability, allowing the interior spaces to extend դեպի the exterior. Sliding glass doors connect the living spaces to a spacious gallery, swimming pool, and landscaped garden, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor relationship while framing panoramic views of the surrounding environment.

Upper Floor: A Floating Private Retreat

The upper level appears as a suspended, linear volume, emphasizing solidity and visual impact. Elevated above the ground, it houses the private areas of the home, including bedrooms designed to maximize views of the cityscape. The contrast between the heavy black concrete and the warmth of kiri wood cladding introduces a balanced material palette, softening the overall aesthetic.

Materiality and Architectural Expression

The defining feature of the Black House is its use of black concrete, which gives the residence a bold, monolithic presence. This material choice reflects a contemporary interpretation of brutalism, combining durability with visual intensity. The incorporation of natural wood elements adds warmth and human scale, creating a harmonious contrast.

Interior Experience and Circulation

A key architectural element is the main staircase, suspended against a concrete wall. This sculptural feature introduces a sense of lightness within the otherwise robust material composition. Positioned within a double-height space, the staircase enhances vertical connectivity and allows natural light to penetrate deep into the interior, enriching the spatial experience.

Indoor-Outdoor Integration

The project emphasizes a fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces. Through expansive glazing and open layouts, the house dissolves boundaries, encouraging interaction with nature. The outdoor areas, including the pool and garden, are integral to the living experience, reinforcing the connection to the landscape.
