Courtyard House Design in Slovakia: House with Gills by beef architekti
House with Gills redefines courtyard house design with angled privacy walls and a lush central garden core in Bratislava.
A Private Sanctuary with a Jungle Core in Bratislava
Tucked into the borderlands of Bratislava, House with Gills by Beef Architekti reimagines contemporary living through a unique courtyard house design. This 316-square-meter residence, completed in 2023, introduces a layered spatial narrative rooted in privacy, light modulation, and a deep connection to nature. By framing the residence around a lush internal atrium, the architects created a sanctuary that shields from the outside world while opening inward to a vibrant core.

A Perimeter Designed to Breathe
The project stands on a complex urban plot surrounded by neighboring developments. To preserve intimacy and block external views, the design introduces angled walls forming a protective envelope around the house. These strategic slants are affectionately referred to as "gills"—structural elements that both shelter the inhabitants and frame curated views toward the garden. From within, the angled geometry dissolves into openness, blurring the boundary between inside and out.

Embracing the Atrium: The Heart of the Home
At the center of this inward-facing design is a verdant courtyard inspired by a jungle. This green atrium acts as both a visual anchor and a biophilic core around which all primary living functions are organized. The layout includes an open-plan living area, kitchen, and dining space, all visually and physically connected to the inner garden. The courtyard not only floods the interior with daylight but also promotes cross-ventilation and a dynamic sensory environment.

Passive Climate Control with Purposeful Shading
A key highlight of the courtyard house design lies in its passive climatic strategies. Deep roof overhangs create generous shading during the summer months, eliminating the need for secondary sun protection systems. During winter, these same architectural gestures allow ample solar gain, warming the interiors naturally. This responsive envelope turns the house into a seasonal machine for comfort, efficiency, and well-being.

Spatial Flow Guided by the Sun
Every space in the house is positioned according to the sunlight cycle. The eastern terrace, bathed in morning light, serves as a tranquil corner for coffee and contemplation. On the other hand, the southern and western edges expand into the primary terrace and swimming pool area, bathed in light throughout the afternoon and evening. This thoughtful solar orientation enhances daily living rhythms while maximizing outdoor usability.

A Pavilion Retreat Above the Roofline
Crowning the horizontal massing of the house is a rooftop pavilion—a wellness space with panoramic views of the Pajštún Castle and the expansive pine landscapes typical of the Záhorie region. This elevated zone functions as a private retreat, seamlessly complementing the grounded, inward-facing character of the main residence.

A Modern Fortress of Calm and Openness
House with Gills is a bold statement in courtyard house design, balancing seclusion with openness, and order with organic flow. The angled perimeter provides security and intimacy, while the central garden breathes vitality into daily life. This house is more than a dwelling—it is a responsive shell that inhales light, air, and nature, all while embracing the people who live within.
