Foster + Partners Crowned Winner of King Salman International Airport Competition in Riyadh
Building the Next Generation of Airports in the Middle East
Foster + Partners has emerged victorious in a design competition for the creation of the King Salman International Airport master plan. The project aims to enhance Riyadh's standing as a prominent global logistics centre, stimulate growth in transportation, trade, and tourism, and serve as a vital link between the Eastern and Western regions.
Luke Fox, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “Looking forward to the future, the new King Salman International Airport reimagines the traditional terminal as a single concourse loop, served by multiple entrances. The terminal is very much of its place and connects passengers to the sensory experiences of the city, with natural elements, tempered light and state-of-the-art facilities.”
The King Salman International Airport is projected to be a massive airport, spanning over 57 km², with the capability to accommodate six parallel runways. It will include the existing terminals named after King Khalid, as well as 12 km² of airport support facilities, residential and recreational amenities, retail shops, and another logistical real estate. The airport's goal is to serve up to 120 million travellers by 2030 and 185 million travellers by 2050, with the ability to handle 3.5 million tons of cargo.
Riyadh's airport is set to transform into a vibrant aerotropolis, focused on delivering a smooth customer experience, top-notch operational efficiency, and cutting-edge innovation. The airport's design will reflect Riyadh's identity and the rich cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia, guaranteeing a truly distinctive travel experience for both visitors and transit passengers.
The design of the new airport places sustainability at the forefront, and it will attain LEED Platinum certification through the integration of innovative green initiatives. The airport will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources.
Seif A. Bahaa Eldin, Senior Partner, Foster + Partners, added: “This visionary development will play an important role in shaping the city into a global hub of creativity and innovation.”
