In the heart of Hangzhou, beside the historically rich Zhonghe River, K1Y Design Lab by K1Y Design redefines biophilic office interior design by interweaving nature, history, and contemporary aesthetics. This 400-square-meter hybrid space, completed in 2025, serves as both a creative design studio and a boutique coffee destination, blurring the lines between work, leisure, and the natural world.

The site is nestled along a river trail that dates back to the Tang Dynasty, offering a canvas of historical and environmental richness. Rather than imposing a new identity, the design borrows from the existing green corridor—infusing the space with its layered textures, shadows, and organic flow. The architecture becomes a continuation of the riverscape, capturing its poetic stillness and transforming it into tactile, livable design.

Material Duality: Stone, Wood, and Light

At the core of this biophilic office interior design is a deliberate contrast between natural and manmade elements. Stone and wood are used in various forms, sizes, and finishes throughout the space. At the entry, a textured stone floor and ceiling evoke an outdoor pathway, grounding the visitor in an earthy palette. These raw elements continue into the skylit core of the building, where gravel beds and stone walls reflect soft daylight, establishing a sense of calm and permanence.

Balancing this rawness is the gentle warmth of wooden features, from sun-filtering curtains to plush, upholstered sofas and seating alcoves. These wood elements—curtains, furniture, and structural details—are scaled thoughtfully to bring rhythm and softness, offering a visual and physical reprieve. The natural tactility of wood balances the precision of steel and glass, bringing human scale and comfort into an otherwise industrial shell.

Fluid Boundaries Between Inside and Out

The spatial concept hinges on permeability—allowing the surrounding natural environment to enter, reflect, and shape the interior. The architecture frames the exterior greenery not as background scenery, but as an active design element. Folding windows introduce fresh air and shifting light, while the original structural facade is preserved, layered with stainless steel and clean aluminum panels that interact with shadows, weather, and time.

Unlike typical office environments that close off from the city, this design opens toward it. The interplay of transparent surfaces, metal textures, and minimal detailing invites daylight deep into the space and brings outdoor impressions inward. Human traces—both past and present—are preserved in etched metal surfaces and patinaed materials, honoring the evolution of the site while creating a sanctuary for creativity and conversation.

Architecture as an Urban Living Room

K1Y Design Lab transcends the conventional office typology. It is designed to be an urban living room—an open invitation for the public to engage with design, culture, and nature. The metal installation at the building's edge, constructed from etched matte stainless steel, reflects the river and city in equal measure. Acting as a mirrored farewell to passing pedestrians, it transforms the site into a contemplative space that acknowledges its community.

Custom seating installations, made from rope mesh and metal framing, allow visitors to sit freely at the threshold between inside and outside. These elements are not ornamental—they support a philosophy where freedom, rest, and openness are integral to the work environment.

The coexistence of mirrored surfaces and living textures speaks to a broader idea: that office spaces can reflect life as much as they support it. Here, the city becomes the content of the architecture, and the building becomes a lens through which one experiences urban nature.
