Langdon House: Harmonious Family Living Through Adaptive Renovation in Palma de Mallorca
Adaptive renovation blends history and modern living in Langdon House, creating flexible, sustainable, and family-friendly spaces in Palma de Mallorca.
Located in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Langdon House is a masterful renovation by Estudi E. Torres Pujol, transforming a former pediatrician’s office into a warm, flexible family home. Completed in 2022, this 150 m² residence was designed to accommodate a family of two adults, two girls, a dog, and a cat, blending past traces with contemporary living. Photographed by Jose Hevia, the house emphasizes openness, material authenticity, and sustainable design practices.

Flexible and Open Living Spaces
The central ambition of the renovation was to create a spacious, multifunctional living-dining-kitchen area that seamlessly connects to the outdoor terrace. To achieve this, several interior partitions were removed, revealing a dramatic ceiling where the old partition traces remain visible. This design choice celebrates the building’s history, creating a dialogue between old and new while maintaining a sense of spatial continuity. The ceiling also exposes custom-designed lighting and installations, intersecting with the historic marks to create a unique visual pattern reminiscent of the home’s previous life.

Climate-Conscious Design
Langdon House integrates passive design strategies to enhance comfort throughout the seasons. The open central space promotes cross ventilation, providing natural cooling during hot summers. Large south-facing openings allow sunlight to warm the interiors during winter, maximizing natural light while reducing energy consumption. Thermal insulation has been upgraded with sheep’s wool, significantly improving energy efficiency while remaining environmentally friendly.

Sustainable Materiality and Craftsmanship
The renovation emphasizes local craftsmanship and sustainable materials. Tiles and new enclosures were sourced from Mallorca, and all timber used carries a sustainable forest management certificate. Structural concrete pillars were left exposed, stripping away plaster to reveal the material’s authentic texture. These interventions highlight the tactile and visual richness of the home while aligning with environmentally responsible construction practices.

Thoughtful Room Distribution
The redesigned layout provides a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and direct terrace access. Adjacent, the girls’ bedroom ensures proximity while maintaining privacy. An independent multipurpose room caters to flexible living needs, functioning as a playroom, study, or guest bedroom. This thoughtful zoning enhances both daily functionality and long-term adaptability, ensuring the home can evolve alongside its occupants.

Exterior Harmony and Light Play
The outdoor terrace façade balances shadows, light, and volumetric composition, creating a dynamic visual experience. A strategically placed corner window serves as a focal point, enriching the façade’s depth and interaction with sunlight throughout the day. These subtle design gestures provide a serene connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Langdon House exemplifies adaptive renovation, family-focused design, and sustainable architecture, blending historical traces with contemporary spatial solutions. Its combination of flexible interiors, passive climate control, and local materials sets a benchmark for residential renovations in Mallorca and beyond.
