The Break Residence by MU Architecture: A Sculptural Lakeside Retreat Rooted in Nature

Located in Saint-Hippolyte, the Break Residence is a striking example of contemporary residential architecture that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. Designed by MU Architecture in 2022, this 6,700-square-foot luxury home sits along the tranquil shores of Lake Revdor. The project reflects a deeply personal vision: a final home built on ancestral land: while embracing modern design principles, natural materials, and spatial fluidity.

This lakeside residence is not just a home; it is a spatial narrative of memory, belonging, and connection to nature. Through its carefully orchestrated volumes, materials, and views, the house becomes a sanctuary for gathering, reflection, and hospitality.

Architectural Concept: A House with Two Distinct Identities

One of the defining characteristics of the Break Residence is its dual personality. The house presents contrasting architectural expressions depending on the viewer’s perspective.

Street-Facing Elevation: Sculptural and Introverted

From the street, the home appears as a composition of interlocking volumes reminiscent of natural rock formations. This sculptural façade responds to the narrow site and sloping topography, revealing only two levels while concealing the garden level below.

The entrance is carved beneath a dramatic double-height canopy, creating a sense of arrival that is both monumental and welcoming. Carefully positioned openings reveal glimpses of circulation spaces and communal areas, reinforcing the home’s emphasis on connectivity and shared experiences.

Lakeside Elevation: Open and Expansive

In contrast, the lakeside façade is open, expressive, and extroverted. Expansive glazing, generous roof overhangs, and angled soffits extend outward, visually connecting the home to the water. Golden-toned soffit accents reflect the shimmering surface of the lake, creating a dynamic interplay between architecture and nature.

This duality, introversion on the street side and openness toward the lake, defines the project’s architectural identity and enhances its contextual responsiveness.

Spatial Organization: A Multi-Level Living Experience

The residence unfolds across three levels, each designed to maximize views, comfort, and functionality. Despite the complexity of the program, the layout maintains a sense of clarity and cohesion.

At its core, the house is designed as a gathering space for both family and a close-knit lakeside community. Circulation flows seamlessly between levels, aided by the inclusion of an elevator, ensuring accessibility and convenience.

Each level incorporates service areas, coffee stations, and bars, reinforcing the home’s hospitality-driven design. Private bedrooms are paired with en-suite bathrooms and balconies, offering personal retreats within the larger communal framework.

Materiality and Interior Design: A Dialogue with Nature

The interior architecture of the Break Residence is defined by a refined palette of natural materials that evoke calmness and timelessness. Stone, wood, and mineral textures create a serene environment that evolves with time.

Central Stone Wall: The Anchoring Element

At the heart of the home stands a monumental stone wall that acts as both a structural and symbolic anchor. Extending across multiple levels, this feature integrates three fireplaces and serves as a unifying element that connects interior spaces.

Its continuity between interior and exterior reinforces the architectural language of the project, blurring boundaries and enhancing spatial coherence.

Natural Materials and Craftsmanship

The material selection is both deliberate and expressive. Quartzite surfaces with fluid veining echo the movement of water, while slate textures add depth and tactility. Warm wood elements: including oak and maple furniture, maple flooring, and western Canadian hemlock ceilings, introduce a sense of comfort and authenticity.

These materials are chosen not only for their aesthetic qualities but also for their ability to age gracefully, allowing the home to develop character over time.

Light, Views, and Atmosphere

Natural light plays a central role in shaping the experience of the Break Residence. Large openings frame panoramic views of the lake and surrounding forest, while daylight penetrates deep into the interior spaces.
