The residential units are arranged concentrically around the sponge system, with 60 sqm ground-level dwellings and 30 sqm elevated units for better sunlight and ventilation. Connected by shared corridors and buffer spaces, the design balances privacy with community interaction. All units overlook the central landscape, offering scenic views.
The neighborhood’s street view features a community center and market spaces adorned with street art that reflects the local culture and environment. These public spaces foster social interaction while blending aesthetics with functionality, creating a strong connection between the built environment and the surrounding flood-resilient landscape.
The design features a sponge system with a central depression and underground structure that slows and retains floodwaters, gradually recharging groundwater. Bio-swales at the site’s edges manage water flow and filter pollutants, complementing the surrounding marshes and forests, creating a natural, eco-friendly flood management system.
The project is a modular, adaptable model for coastal areas at flood risk, aiming to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that enhances biodiversity and fosters community-driven economic growth, while balancing environmental sensitivity with social and economic vitality.
The site's design calls for arranging the residents such that they face the central green landscape in a concentric pattern. Along the configuration's primary axis are the community spaces. On the higher contours of the sites, common parking lots and garden spaces are positioned to serve as safe havens in the event of flooding.
The sections highlight the sponge city's placement below the surface and its varying elevations, strategically located in the site’s depression for effective flood management. Each section showcases the sponge city’s unique characteristics, emphasizing its undulating topography.
