Home as a Place of Connection: Architecture for Family and Emotional Wellbeing

Karachi’s middle-income families are increasingly limited to 120-square-yard homes due to urban growth and rising land values. This project explores how these houses provide shelter but often lack spaces that support emotional wellbeing and family connection. Research through surveys, interviews, and case studies identified physical comfort, emotional belonging, and family bonding as key values of home. The design responds through adaptable growth, shared spaces, passive cooling, and strategies.

The Joint Family Home is an adaptable residential system that grows with the family over time. Starting from a single floor, additional levels are added as the family expands, supporting nuclear and joint living without displacement. The design integrates cultural identity, shared spaces, courtyards, passive cooling, and incremental growth to create an affordable home that preserves connection, dignity, and belonging.

The Multi-Family Home rethinks shared living for middle-income families in Karachi by creating two independent homes within a 120-square-yard structure. Instead of compromising privacy and identity, the design provides separate entrances, shared environmental benefits, and equal access to comfort. Through courtyards, passive cooling, and adaptable planning, it transforms necessity into dignified and connected living.

The street becomes an extension of home, where architecture restores identity and belonging within Karachi’s changing urban fabric. Through colour, perforated screens, greenery, and human-scaled spaces, the design brings back the warmth of traditional neighbourhoods while responding to contemporary needs. Each house becomes a reflection of the families who live within it.
