Architectural Thesis Report: Maritime research & awareness centre

Tarangini – Maritime Research & Experience Centre By Oum Kuvelkar | Goa College of Architecture, 2024 “Tarangini”, meaning “that which flows,” is a visionary architectural thesis exploring the intersection of heritage, ecology, and education through the lens of Goa’s rich maritime legacy. Situated in Bainguinim, along the banks of the Mandovi River, the project proposes a Maritime Research & Experience Centre that becomes both a custodian of history and an incubator for future innovation. The design draws upon Goa’s layered maritime past—from ancient shipyards and Indo-Portuguese naval prowess to contemporary ecological challenges—by integrating research, education, tourism, and community engagement into a singular architectural experience. Through carefully zoned spaces such as wet and dry labs, maritime training facilities, awareness galleries, and an experiential pavilion, the project reimagines how public and institutional architecture can coexist. Key architectural moves—such as a central axis inspired by the keel of a ship, a timber bridge referencing historic docks, and sail-like shading structures—embed storytelling into the built form. The spatial progression from monumental to intimate, the strategic use of water and green courtyards, and the activation of river edges foster a dynamic and immersive learning environment. “Tarangini” is not just a centre—it is a cultural anchor for maritime memory, environmental education, and resilient futures, poised to revitalize Goa’s identity as a sea-facing society.
