Lesser-Known Architects: Analyzing the Contributions and Underrepresentation of Female Arc
This essay explores the significant gender disparity, under-recognition, challenges for females in the field of architecture in Pakistan, where female architects face a lack of support and limited opportunities. The essay highlights significant yet lesser-known architects like Yasmeen Lari, Fauzia Hussain Qureshi and Parveen Rehman. Their contribution in the field is particularly community based, humanitarian, and conservation projects. However, these architects faced limited recognition on the global stage which reflects the underrepresentation of non-western architects particularly females involved in socially responsible work. Despite challenges, Yasmin Lari emerges as the most renowned female architect, noted for her extensive humanitarian work and contributions to sustainable design. Fauzia Qureshi and Parveen Rehaman have made remarkable contributions as well. A key observation is that most of the renowned female architects in Pakistan are primarily involved in community based, humanitarian or conservation projects rather than large-scale commercial ventures. However, most of the contributions are underappreciated especially when compared to global recognitions of their male counterparts like Kamil Khan Mumtaz and Nayyar Ali Dada. This imbalance suggests that the professional landscape in Pakistan remains male-dominated, with Lari’s achievements standing as an exception rather than the norm. The essay highlights how these women work through challenges in the male dominated field and points out problems like gender bias, cultural constraints and socio-political issues that keep these female architects in Pakistan from being more recognized and influential. By examining their careers, this essay sheds light on the systemic barriers preventing architects from regions like Pakistan from receiving the international recognition they deserve.
