The Eye Haven: a hurricane protection centre in Crockett Texas
Every few years, Texas faces the aftermath of severe hurricanes. These storms devastate the state, especially on the south and south east sides since they are closest to the gulf where a lot of hurricanes culminate. Crockett, the site in question, is the main city in Houson county. It is topographically lower than the Eastern side of Texas so it takes the full brunt of hurricanes and storms. Unfortunately the city does not hace any safe shelters to protect citizens during a hurricane. They have to either travel to the closest shelter or drive up 2 hours to Dallas, another city in Texas, which is safer as it is more inland. The Eye Haven aims to fill the gap and provide the people of Crockett with a safe shelter they can stay in during storms. During calmer times, the shelter can be transformed into a community centre where it can host cultural activities and act as an extension of civil services surrounding the site.
