Homes and investments

The world is at a crossroads where we are constantly on the move. Be it anywhere in the world or any corner we belong in. It is so universal that owning a home sometimes feels limiting than liberating. At the same time pit against the rising construction/labour costs are pushing real estate prices at an all-time high.

The splits questions ownership and investment dilemma heavily.

It brings us an interesting question – how can a new pattern of ownership be found especially in the context of today?

How can we explore the definition of home in sync with the paced trends of today? What can be a new way of defining the future of home design allowing users to choose and build their own homes?

Idea

A traditional RCC constructed and brickwork infilled buildings are popular across the world. They are in a way the go-to approach while building for the long run. But because of this un-challenged approach, we have stopped considering any other method to build buildings.

What if there was a kit of parts that can lead to great architectural designs every time there was a house desired?

What if this kit of parts could be made without heavy construction machinery and can be made with help of smaller simple machines? What if architects globally could design plugins for this house that change the usages every time a person wishes to upgrade?

What if this kit of parts is available globally as a system to build houses quickly in places where access to construction materials is not available?

Brief

The design challenge looks at this tiny DIY house model system that is made entirely of modular components that can be manufactured. This design exercise is multi-stage and is open to all three stages.

The first stage of the challenge will look at the building systems of walls, structures, and services. This exercise will involve selecting materials, assembly techniques, choosing a combination of systems, and finalizing the exterior shell of the building. The subsequent phases will involve conceiving internal finishes, wall systems, plugins, and home development modular components based on the winning proposal of this challenge.

Hence the design shall be open to growth and modularity right from its smallest to largest steps. While modularity can be seen as restraining, participants are advised to bring in customization as much as possible within the limited scope.

Objectives

  • Modularity: How can we induce a quality of modularity in every element of a building that has the ability to be manufactured sustainably?
  • Ease: Systems that are logical and simple to understand and supervise. This thought can also extend to creating complex processes in factories and simple processes onsite.
  • Materials: Identifying and choosing materials – that can be manufactured, transferred, and have the ability to endure like a normal home?
  • Future growth: How can parts or the entire design be replicated across similar situations at other places?

Site

The site can be in any peri-urban place in the world. The site is 30ftm x 40ft placed in a peri-urban region of a city. The entire home is supposed to be delivered on trailers/trucks hence please note the maximum sizes (12.05m x 2.35m x 2.69m – 40ft High Cube) that can be shipped.

The installation process should be schematically demonstrated via stages. As the design challenge is of a tiny house – the total square footage of the carpet area of the house should not be more than 550sqft.
