Huang Pu Cultural Centre by IFRA: A Landmark of Expressionist Architecture in Shanghai
Huang Pu Cultural Centre by IFRA is a striking architectural landmark in Shanghai, blending modern expressionist design with historic urban context.
The Huang Pu Cultural Centre, designed by IFRA and led by Frederic Rolland, is a striking new addition to Shanghai’s urban landscape. Located at the southern edge of the historic Huangpu District, the cultural complex spans 45,436 m², seamlessly integrating performance, exhibition, and community spaces within a bold, expressionist architectural form. The project was completed in 2024, redefining the relationship between tradition and modernity in the heart of the city.

An Architectural Dialogue Between Old and New
Positioned near the remnants of the Ming Dynasty old city wall, the Huang Pu Cultural Centre establishes a dialogue between the low-rise Shikumen alleyways to the north and the high-rise residential developments to the southeast. The contrast between these elements necessitated an innovative design solution that embraces both historical context and urban transformation.
The architectural form rises freely, adopting organic curves and a dynamic elliptical shape that resonates with the historic city fabric. The tapered structure introduces stepped terraces and sky gardens, fostering a human-centric design that minimizes its impact on the surrounding low-rise neighborhoods while ensuring ample natural light penetration.

Expressive Design and Functionality
The free-flowing, sculptural design of the building reflects Shanghai’s evolving cultural identity. Enveloped in textured white metal facades, the exterior exhibits a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow, creating a luminous effect that shifts throughout the day. The perforated metal cladding enhances ventilation and light diffusion, reinforcing both sustainability and aesthetic appeal.
The main theater space features fluid, horizontal ribbon-like elements that extend from the walls to the ceiling, incorporating integrated lighting and acoustic design for a seamless audience experience. The grand lobby, connected to an urban plaza, provides an inviting and transparent interface between the cultural center and the city beyond. Meanwhile, the audience lounge, marked by a monumental cascading staircase and open corridors, dramatizes the movement of visitors, enhancing the immersive experience of the space.

A New Cultural Beacon in Shanghai
Beyond its architectural statement, the Huang Pu Cultural Centre serves as a vibrant hub for performing arts, exhibitions, and community engagement. By blending cutting-edge design with historic reverence, the project stands as a testament to Shanghai’s commitment to cultural innovation and urban renewal.
