Nestled between the lush woods and the serene hills overlooking Lugano Lake, a 1950s-era building has undergone a remarkable refurbishment. Designed by Raffaele Cammarata architetto, this project reimagines a compact holiday residence to create an intimate retreat. The renovation showcases a harmonious blend of modern design and natural elements, embodying the essence of a private hotel stay while respecting the unique characteristics of its location.

Inspiration and Concept
This holiday residence was envisioned as a sanctuary for brief escapes, combining minimalism with functionality. The architect’s approach was to maximize every inch of the property while preserving its unique history. Two distinct structures occupy the site: the main holiday home and a dock with a garage, flanked by two majestic trees.
The concept focuses on optimizing the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. Large glass panels draw the garden and lake into the interiors, creating a seamless connection to nature.


Design Highlights
1. Preserving History with Stone
One of the central elements of the renovation is the stone basement, sourced from a now-defunct local cave. This stone base serves as a historical anchor for the property, echoing the construction traditions of Lugano Lake’s historic homes.
2. Maximizing Space
The interior layout prioritizes openness and efficiency. Key spaces include:
- A covered outdoor porch, perfect for quiet contemplation.
- An open-plan living room and kitchen, promoting social interaction and connection.
- A cozy bedroom offering privacy and tranquility.
- A compact bathroom, designed with precision to utilize space effectively.
3. Integration with Nature
Natural materials like wood and stone are prominently used throughout the residence. Wooden floors and walls mirror the surrounding trees, while stone elements bring the essence of the lake indoors.

1. Glass Panels for Expansive Views
Floor-to-ceiling glass panels transform the interior by framing the lake and garden views. These elements amplify the sense of space, allowing natural light to flood the interiors while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors.

To navigate the elevation changes on the property, a series of ramps connect the parking area to the lake. These ramps enhance accessibility and provide a graceful transition between levels.
3. Sheltered Entrance for Privacy
A cement wall at the property’s entrance shields it from the adjacent road, creating a private and tranquil entryway.
