Apple Store The Exchange TRX: A Landmark Retail Pavilion by Foster + Partners
Apple Store TRX features a glowing domed roof, tropical garden connections, refined materials, and seamless multi-level spaces by Foster + Partners.
The Apple Store The Exchange TRX marks a milestone as Apple’s first retail location in Malaysia, strategically positioned within Kuala Lumpur’s rapidly developing Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) district. Designed by Foster + Partners, the project redefines commercial architecture through an innovative fusion of structural clarity, sculptural form, and environmental responsiveness. The store acts as a destination within the new mixed-use hub, bridging the TRX mall with its rooftop park while establishing a luminous urban beacon for both day and night.
The architectural concept centers on creating an inviting and highly interactive retail environment. The store’s three-dimensional layered roof is visually striking, emitting a soft glow that draws visitors from across the district. By linking the mall’s central atrium to a lush tropical garden and communal rooftop lawn, the project strengthens TRX’s social fabric and expands public connectivity within the development.

A Sculptural Dome Responding to Malaysia’s Tropical Climate
At the heart of the design is a meticulously engineered glazed dome measuring 26.5 x 26.5 meters. This geometrically complex roof transitions effortlessly from a square base into a circular form at its apex, creating an elegant architectural statement that blends structure and lightness.
To address Malaysia’s intense tropical climate, the roof is wrapped in a series of precisely angled fins that regulate solar heat while maintaining daylight quality. Near the base, the fins create a seemingly solid silhouette. As visitors ascend, the structure opens up and becomes increasingly porous, enhancing airflow and light. The lowest fin extends outward, shading the transparent façade and forming a continuous elevated walkway around the pavilion.
A central glazed oculus with a 30% ceramic frit softens incoming daylight and integrates a dynamic lighting feature that animates the space throughout the day. This oculus functions not only as a source of illumination but also as an architectural focal point within the store’s interior landscape.

A Three-Level Retail Experience Immersed in Light and Landscape
The interior unfolds across three interconnected levels, creating a fluid spatial journey that frames views of the surrounding park and cityscape. The upper viewing deck opens directly onto the rooftop garden, allowing natural light and tropical greenery to permeate the retail experience. This seamless indoor-outdoor connection reflects Apple’s commitment to transparency, community, and human-centered design.
A sculptural quartz and glass staircase anchors the store’s vertical circulation, offering multiple vantage points and choreographed movement throughout the space. A bespoke glazed elevator complements the stair, reinforcing the sense of openness and vertical continuity. The tiered landings create layered sightlines that connect the Forum, Avenue, and display zones across the store.
The Forum is situated on a floating deck, serving as the venue for Today at Apple sessions and community events. The Avenue and product tables occupy the lower level, connecting directly to the mall concourse. Additional program elements include an expansive video wall, executive boardroom, and a dedicated Apple Pickup station to streamline customer experience.

Material Refinement Rooted in Apple’s Global Design Language
The store’s material palette embodies precision, refinement, and timelessness, qualities synonymous with Apple’s architectural identity. Natural stone walls provide a tactile backdrop to the retail display zones, while polished stainless-steel columns enhance the sense of structural delicacy and light reflection. Light terrazzo flooring by Terrazzo & Marble creates a cohesive foundation across all levels, and the warm timber ceiling adds a layer of comfort and softness that balances the building’s contemporary aesthetic.
Each material has been selected to elevate durability, user comfort, and visual clarity. Together, they reinforce the store’s role as both a civic pavilion and a high-performance retail environment within Kuala Lumpur’s rapidly evolving urban landscape.

A New Cultural and Commercial Anchor for TRX
Apple Store The Exchange TRX is more than a retail destination, it is a landmark within Malaysia’s newest financial district and a public gathering space that enhances the cultural vibrancy of the TRX development. Through its expressive roof form, climate-responsive architecture, and seamless integration with landscape, the project showcases Foster + Partners’ continued evolution of Apple’s global flagship identity while contributing a distinct architectural signature to Kuala Lumpur.
