Architecture Classics: Biblioteca El Tintal by Bermúdez Arquitectos – A Model of Urban Regeneration and Adaptive Reuse
Biblioteca El Tintal transforms an industrial waste site into a vibrant public library, blending adaptive reuse with sustainable architecture.
Located in Bogotá, Colombia, Biblioteca El Tintal by Bermúdez Arquitectos is a benchmark in sustainable architecture and adaptive reuse. This iconic public library, completed in 2001, stands on the grounds of a former waste transfer station, transformed into a vibrant cultural and educational hub for the city’s southwestern sector.

From Industrial Ruin to Community Landmark
The architectural strategy embraced the existing 3,600 m² concrete warehouse, a robust industrial shell with ample spans and high ceilings. Rather than demolishing the old infrastructure, Bermúdez Arquitectos revitalized it into a 6,650 m² library, incorporating its raw materiality into a contemporary civic space. The transformation preserved the gray concrete of the original structure while introducing light concrete elements bush-hammered to reveal luminous limestone aggregates—enhancing both light reflection and textural contrast.

Architectural Innovation: Viaduct as Connector
A standout feature is the 75-meter-long elevated viaduct, once used for waste transport. Ingeniously repurposed, this structure now serves as the main access route to the library's upper levels. More than circulation, it acts as an architectural gesture—bridging the park and library, and fostering interaction between the public and the building.

A Reading Room Bathed in Natural Light
On the second floor lies an expansive 7-meter-high reading hall, crowned by seven north-facing skylights that filter in abundant, indirect natural light. This design reduces the need for artificial lighting while creating a calm and contemplative space. Flanked by light pockets and framed windows with views of the Bogotá savanna and distant hills, the reading room becomes both functional and poetic.
The open-plan layout—thanks to centralized core services—allows complete spatial flexibility. This openness enhances visual clarity and supports varied uses without interrupting the architectural flow.

A Library for All Generations
The ground floor is anchored by a long circulation corridor, punctuated with windows and circular apertures. It connects diverse functions such as a children's library, auditorium, sound library, and video library. Additionally, mezzanines exploit the original voids of the hopper structure to house administrative offices and specialized collections.
The technical and mechanical systems are placed outside the primary volume, maximizing usable space while enabling efficient maintenance and vertical distribution.

An Urban Regeneration Catalyst
More than a building, El Tintal is part of a 5-hectare urban park development that reclaims derelict land for public good. Situated at the junction of Avenida Ciudad de Cali and 6th Street, the library anchors this urban revitalization initiative, symbolizing renewal through design and the democratization of culture.
