Avenue House by ADDARC – Contemporary Row Housing in Brighton East, Australia
Avenue House by ADDARC reimagines row housing with pitched roofs, landscaped mews, natural light, and refined materials in Brighton East.
Located in Brighton East, Australia, Avenue House by ADDARC redefines urban living through an innovative approach to the traditional row housing typology. Completed in 2022, this residential development transforms an underutilized site within an active urban precinct into a collection of nine contemporary dwellings, designed to provide greater housing diversity, accessibility, and community-focused living.

Urban Context and Design Concept
The architectural strategy was rooted in enhancing both collective and individual identity. Arranged around a heavily landscaped central mews, the homes embrace shared greenery while maintaining personal distinction. The architects drew inspiration from familiar pitched roof forms, layering them across the composition to create visual rhythm and subtle individuality. This design ensures that each dwelling is easily identifiable, fostering a stronger sense of ownership and belonging for residents.

Materiality and Aesthetic
ADDARC employs a refined palette of standing seam zinc cladding and charred timber, establishing a robust exterior expression that seamlessly continues indoors. Inside, the materiality evolves into deep-toned paneled walls, polished plaster, and muted finishes, intentionally restrained to allow natural light and landscape views to become the central design elements. This continuity blurs the threshold between exterior and interior, creating a holistic living environment that feels grounded yet open.

Light, Space, and Privacy
Daylight was a central driver in the design. Animated roof forms, expansive windows, and directional screening systems carefully balance abundant natural light with privacy and external amenity considerations. These features not only enhance comfort but also elevate the spatial experience, making each home feel both airy and intimate.

Community and Landscape Integration
The central landscaped mews serves as the project’s social and ecological core, encouraging neighborly interaction while reinforcing a connection to nature. Generous private outdoor spaces complement the communal greenery, giving residents multiple layers of engagement with their environment.

A Premium Residential Offering
From its thoughtful material composition to its dynamic spatial volumes and landscape integration, Avenue House represents a unique and premium housing solution within the Brighton East market. It stands as a model for how contemporary architecture can reinterpret traditional typologies to meet modern expectations of sustainability, individuality, and community living.
