Nestled in the breathtaking Orobic Alps of Valtellina, Italy, the Baitridana Hut stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Alpine vernacular architecture. Designed by Rinaldo Del Nero, this restoration project revives an ancient stone refuge at 1,900 meters above sea level within the municipality of Albaredo per San Marco in the province of Sondrio. The maggengo alpine pasture, with its steep terrain and scattered historic structures, provides a dramatic setting for this project, blending past traditions with contemporary interventions.
Preserving History Through Thoughtful Restoration
Although not officially classified as a heritage site, the Baitridana Hut holds deep architectural and cultural significance, embodying the essence of rural Alpine construction. The project’s primary objective was to preserve the historical identity of the hut while ensuring its structural stability and usability as a temporary mountain retreat. Rather than altering its original purpose, the restoration safeguards its authentic spirit, preventing further decay and abandonment.
A Dialogue Between Old and New Architecture
The restoration strategy embraced a conservation-first approach, respecting the original stone shell while introducing a modern insulated wooden core within. This careful insertion ensures energy efficiency while maintaining the building's historical integrity. Additionally, a new architectural extension connects to the existing structure through a deliberate material and visual contrast—a contemporary larch-clad volume that distinctly stands apart from the aged stone walls.
