Boundary Point Cabin: Lakeside Modern Retreat by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson & Miller Mottola Calabro
Lakeside cantilevered cabin in British Columbia, blending modern design, sustainability, and family-centered spaces amid forested surroundings and panoramic views.
Perched above a glacial lake in southern British Columbia, the Boundary Point Cabin by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in collaboration with Miller Mottola Calabro is a modern family retreat designed for seasonal gatherings. Completed in 2020, this 2,500-square-foot lakeside home blends seamlessly with its forested surroundings, offering panoramic views and an immersive nature experience.

The cabin was envisioned as a flexible space for a young, multigenerational family who visit the lake each summer. With an existing, modest cabin on the property, the clients were drawn to the site’s natural features—towering Douglas firs, cedar, pine, and rocky outcroppings—along with breathtaking reflections across the water. The design carefully preserves these characteristics while expanding the site’s potential for communal living, outdoor recreation, and seasonal activities.

Architecture Inspired by Nature
Following the sloping terrain, the cabin’s wedge-like form cantilevers dramatically over the rocky lakeside bluff, evoking a sense of floating within the forest canopy. Dark-stained Western red cedar siding and fiber cement panels visually integrate the structure into its surroundings, while the play of light and shadow softens the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. A Douglas fir beam trellis guides visitors from the arrival sequence to lake views, establishing a seamless connection with nature.

Sustainable Design & Regional Craftsmanship
The project emphasizes minimal environmental impact and sustainable practices. Eighty percent of construction materials were sourced locally, and regional builders and fabricators were engaged to ensure a cost-effective, high-quality build. Existing structures were thoughtfully adapted, including a relocated log cabin renovated for guest accommodations. New site additions—such as campsites, a fire pit, and a stairway to the lake—were designed to enhance the landscape without overwhelming it.

Interior Experience
The cabin’s interiors are defined by warmth and simplicity. The light-filled great room is wrapped in pre-finished birch plywood, providing a natural, inviting atmosphere. The kitchen serves as the social hub, connecting family gatherings inside to outdoor dining experiences. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the lake and forest vistas, while slender steel cross bracing ensures structural stability without compromising views.
A lofted bedroom wing, accessed via an exterior stair and internal ladder, offers private retreats and bunk rooms for children. Energy-efficient systems, including a fireplace and continuous exterior insulation, make the cabin comfortable year-round. During summer, large operable windows and doors provide natural ventilation, connecting indoor living areas to the surrounding landscape.

A Harmonious Lakeside Retreat
Boundary Point Cabin exemplifies sensitive modern architecture that celebrates its environment, family-centered design, and sustainable construction. Its strategic orientation, material selection, and cantilevered form create a serene lakeside retreat that merges contemporary living with the beauty of southern British Columbia’s wilderness.
