Breaking Ground with Brick: Architekti Mikulaj & Mikulajová's Magnificent Creation in Záhorské Sady!
Can Architekti Mikulaj & Mikulajová's Brick House in Záhorské Sady Redefine Modern Architecture?

Bratislava, Slovakia - Nestled on the outskirts of Bratislava, amidst a sprawling plot of land overlooking a picturesque forest, lies a remarkable architectural marvel. Architekti Mikulaj & Mikulajová have seamlessly blended tradition and innovation to create a stunning brick house that caters to the needs of a growing family.
The plot presented a unique challenge with its orientation and the rapid development of neighbouring family houses. To overcome these obstacles, the architects conceived an ingenious concept - three interconnected houses that maximize sunlight and provide a sense of privacy despite the bustling surroundings.
Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of brickwork in the region, the architects skillfully combined burnt brick with contrasting smooth surfaces, allowing the unique texture of the brick to take centre stage. From the façade to the pavements of terraces, and even in the interior, bricks make a bold statement. They adorn the arches, serve as semi-transparent curtains in building openings, and are even reflected in mirrors and windowsills.
The three houses each serve distinct purposes. The largest, a spacious two-story structure, houses the private zone with bedrooms and children's rooms. Thoughtfully placed windows and a generously proportioned staircase flood the space with natural light, offering delightful views of the garden.
The medium-sized house boasts a captivating living room featuring a double-sided fireplace and a partially separated library. Elevated to welcome southwest sunlight through strip glazing under the ceiling, the living room exudes a warm and inviting ambience.
At the entrance to the plot stands the smallest house, serving as a garage and garden service area. These brick houses are interwoven with light-filled, glazed spaces accessible from both sides. One forms an elegant entrance hall, while the other is the heart of family life, accommodating a kitchen, dining room, and a double-sided fireplace.
The kitchen layout is unconventional yet functional, with a large dining table and two kitchen islands. This innovative design allows parents to enjoy panoramic views of both the northeast-facing pool and the smaller southwest terrace while preparing meals.
Every detail has been meticulously considered, with windows strategically positioned like captivating artworks. The glazed spaces feature concrete-beamed ceilings that seamlessly blend with the outdoors. A single axis gracefully connects all the areas, offering enchanting views of the garden at every turn.
The external walls are composed of ceramic bricks, complemented by a thermal insulation layer of mineral wool and a ventilated air gap. A Belgian Marziale face brick adorns the façade, lending an exquisite touch to the architectural masterpiece. Sustainability is at the core of this project, with reinforced concrete ceilings integrating a cooling system and various eco-friendly features such as a heat pump, air recovery, photovoltaics, a well for garden needs, and green roofs.
Architekti Mikulaj & Mikulajová's plot home is a testament to their ingenuity and dedication to creating an ecological, sustainable, and environmentally friendly dwelling. With its harmonious blend of traditional brickwork and modern design elements, this exceptional residence stands tall as a symbol of architectural brilliance and a sanctuary for the growing family fortunate enough to call it home.
