Café Interior Design Inspired by Egyptian Heritage: Beano’s Café by SHEWEKAR Design Studio
An elegant café interior design project that merges Egyptian heritage with contemporary style at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernity in Café Interior Design
Beano’s Café at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Kafr Nassar, Egypt, stands as a testament to the power of culturally rooted café interior design. Created by SHEWEKAR Design Studio in 2023, the 450 m² space masterfully weaves together the essence of Egyptian heritage with the comfort and aesthetics of contemporary design, delivering an experience that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.

A Banyan Tree as the Central Design Metaphor
Upon entering Beano’s Café, visitors are greeted by a striking brass installation inspired by the sacred Banyan tree—a plant native to Egypt, believed in folklore to grant wishes. This sculptural tree anchors the design narrative, with aerial roots translated into delicate, swirling forms of perforated brass sheets. It serves as a spiritual and visual centerpiece that connects the café to the soul of Egyptian culture while elevating the spatial ambiance to suit the iconic grandeur of its GEM location.

Materials that Tell Stories: From Granite to Alabaster
Every element within Beano’s Café was chosen to reflect a deeper cultural meaning. The countertop is constructed from roughly cut Aswani granite, a material historically associated with Egyptian strength and permanence. Lighting fixtures were custom-designed using alabaster, a soft translucent stone revered in Ancient Egypt for its spiritual glow and elegance. These materials not only enhance the café’s tactile and visual appeal but also provide historical context, infusing the space with symbolic weight and timeless charm.

Blue Glass and Papyrus: Ancient Motifs in a Modern Setting
The café’s design integrates custom-made blue glass etched with papyrus motifs—an homage to ancient Egyptian symbolism. In pharaonic times, blue was the color of the divine heavens and life-giving waters. Its inclusion here, contrasted against warm wood tones and rich textures, adds both vibrancy and depth to the interior. This thoughtful blend of historical references and modern materials forms the core of the café’s aesthetic—sophisticated yet inviting, grounded yet imaginative.

Maintaining Brand Continuity Across Locations
Despite its prestigious location within the Grand Egyptian Museum, Beano’s Café retains the cozy, neighborhood vibe that defines the brand. The eclectic mix of materials, the curated furniture pieces with modern lines, and a warm color palette all contribute to a feeling of familiarity. The design doesn't sacrifice comfort for spectacle; instead, it enhances everyday café culture with a layer of cultural significance.

A Landmark in Café Interior Design
Beano’s Café by SHEWEKAR Design Studio sets a new benchmark for culturally integrated café interior design. Its seamless fusion of local heritage with contemporary aesthetics creates a memorable space that respects its context and elevates the experience of visitors. More than just a place to enjoy coffee, it becomes a cultural touchstone—honoring the past while celebrating modern Egyptian creativity.
