Nestled in the shadow of Oatlands’ iconic windmill, Callington Mill Distillery by Cumulus Studio masterfully blends industrial functionality with a captivating visitor experience. Designed in 2022, this 1,562 m² hospitality and brewery project seamlessly integrates traditional materials and local heritage aesthetics with contemporary architectural forms, creating a destination that celebrates both whisky craftsmanship and tourism.

Harmonizing Heritage and Modernity

The architectural design responds to the industrial requirements of a fully operational whisky distillery while offering a rich sensory experience for visitors. The exterior cladding, predominantly soft, chalky brick, echoes the sandstone textures of surrounding historic buildings, maintaining alignment with local heritage codes. Simple gabled forms mirror the scale and silhouettes of Oatlands’ rooftops, establishing a dialogue between old and new, tradition and innovation.

Immersive Interior Experience

Inside, the distillery evokes the warm, rich tones of whisky through refined material choices. Tasmanian Oak joinery, golden-hued marble surfaces, and brass fittings combine with minimal lighting to craft intimate spaces. From the tasting rooms to the cellar door, every interior detail reinforces the narrative of local whisky production while creating an inviting and memorable visitor experience.

Thoughtful Planning and Engineering

The project exemplifies multidisciplinary collaboration, with GLB Construction delivering precise build quality, Saltmarsh & Escobar Consulting ensuring structural integrity, and COVA handling civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Landscape architects Playstreet contributed to the surrounding environment, harmonizing outdoor spaces with the building’s historic context. The meticulous planning ensures that the distillery functions efficiently as an industrial facility while providing an immersive tourism experience.
