Dean Dyson Architects have masterfully designed the Cloud House, a stunning residential project completed in 2023 in Malvern, Australia. Spanning approximately 780 square meters, this contemporary home redefines the concept of sanctuary living by integrating natural textures, forms, and colors into its architectural identity. With photography by Timothy Kaye capturing the serene atmosphere, Cloud House stands as a prime example of privacy-focused design amidst a challenging urban context.


A Vision Rooted in Nature and Privacy
The design philosophy behind Cloud House centers on two main inspirations: the clients’ desire for a private retreat and the architects’ ambition to evoke the calming textures and natural colors found in the environment. This vision translates into a home that offers both tranquility and connection to nature, creating an inward sanctuary within a bustling cityscape.
Located on an exceptionally narrow site bordered by towering five-story apartment buildings, Cloud House faced significant privacy and spatial challenges. The proximity of these neighboring structures demanded innovative architectural solutions to preserve the home's openness while shielding it from external views.


Innovative Privacy Solutions: Brick Facade & Tessellated Openings
To address these challenges, Dean Dyson Architects employed a heavyweight masonry strategy, prioritizing acoustic and thermal insulation to enhance comfort and seclusion. The building’s primary material is a custom-designed brick profile wrapping the entire first floor, which conceals large glazed openings behind carefully placed tessellated brickwork. This technique simultaneously maximizes natural light penetration and maintains privacy.
On the ground floor, the design shifts towards openness with expansive glazed areas that frame intimate private gardens. These visual connections bring nature indoors while safeguarding the residents’ privacy from the neighboring apartments.


Breaking the Linear Floor Plan: Curves and Voids for Flow and Light
The home's elongated footprint was cleverly broken up using strategically placed voids and curved surfaces. These architectural features interrupt the linearity, allowing light to travel through multiple levels and creating visual connections between spaces. This design encourages fluid movement throughout the home, inviting exploration and engagement with the environment.


Materiality and Atmosphere
Cloud House’s material palette reflects its natural inspiration. The custom brickwork, alongside carefully selected manufacturers such as AWS, Green Stone, Rakumba, and White Stone, creates a tactile environment that feels grounded yet sophisticated. Large overhangs provide shading and shelter, enhancing the house’s sustainable credentials.
