Copan Apartment Renovation by Vereda Arquitetos: A Modern Tribute to São Paulo’s Iconic Landmark
A 40m² Copan apartment renovated by Vereda Arquitetos preserves modernist heritage, enhancing functionality with blue Formica, terrazzo, and exposed concrete.
The Copan Building, an architectural masterpiece by Oscar Niemeyer, stands as one of São Paulo’s most recognizable landmarks. Among its many residential units, a recent renovation by Vereda Arquitetos breathes new life into a compact 40-square-meter apartment, preserving the modernist essence while introducing contemporary elements that enhance functionality and aesthetics.

Preserving the Legacy of Modernist Architecture
Located in Block B of the Copan Building, the one-bedroom apartment renovation respects the original layout while incorporating subtle yet effective updates. The design retains the distinctive spatial arrangement, where the bedroom and living area remain separated by the existing built-in closet, a defining feature of the unit. Vereda Arquitetos opted to refurbish this structural element rather than replace it, maintaining its historical significance within the apartment’s framework.

Materiality and Color: A Dialogue Between Past and Present
A key highlight of the renovation is the transformation of the closet with blue Formica paneling, creating a striking contrast with the exposed concrete walls. The closet doors were rearranged to form a seamless flat panel facing the living area, complemented by a custom plywood rack and bench in the same hue. This thoughtful intervention enhances both storage and visual continuity within the space.
In a nod to modernist materiality, the renovation exposes the concrete structure, celebrating its raw texture while harmonizing it with both original and newly introduced finishes. The balance between industrial aesthetics and refined detailing defines the apartment’s renewed identity.

Vibrant Interiors with a Touch of Terrazzo
The kitchen and bathroom feature a distinctive bluish terrazzo finish, applied to both floors and walls. This choice not only introduces a sense of cohesion but also resonates with the vibrant hues of the bedroom/living room closet, creating a unified design language throughout the apartment. The terrazzo adds depth and texture, reinforcing the apartment’s modernist spirit while offering durability and easy maintenance—ideal for urban living.

Optimized Functionality in a Compact Space
With a footprint of just 40 square meters, maximizing efficiency was crucial in the renovation. The revised layout ensures that every element serves both an aesthetic and practical purpose. The thoughtful integration of furniture, storage solutions, and material choices reflects a deep understanding of compact urban living, making the space feel more open and inviting.

A Contemporary Reflection of São Paulo’s Architectural Heritage
By respecting the original design while incorporating contemporary enhancements, Vereda Arquitetos successfully revitalized this iconic Copan apartment. The project stands as an exemplary model of how small-space renovations can honor architectural heritage while meeting modern-day needs.
