The Divya Shanthi School redesign by Flying Elephant Studio transforms education and community spaces with innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity.
Divya Shanthi School & Campus Upgrades
Located in the heart of Bengaluru, the Divya Shanthi School & Campus Upgrades by Flying Elephant Studio is a transformative architectural project that marries innovation, functionality, and community impact. Completed in 2019, this 50,000-square-foot campus stands as a beacon of hope in a low-income neighborhood, addressing vital educational and social needs while promoting sustainability and inclusivity.

A Multi-Program Facility for Community Development
Key Features of the Campus Design
This multi-program building houses a diverse range of facilities, including:
- Educational Spaces: Science labs, teacher training center, and a special needs program.
- Residential Areas: Dormitories for children and a transition home for senior girls.
- Community Resources: A library, dining hall, and a primary healthcare clinic.
These facilities are not only for the school but also cater to the broader neighborhood, providing essential services that enhance the quality of life.

Architectural Vision by Flying Elephant Studio
Responsive Design for Urban Challenges
In a densely populated urban setting, space optimization was critical. The building's stacked layout integrates various programs on multiple levels, ensuring connectivity and functionality while maintaining privacy for sensitive areas like the girls' residences.

The Modern Verandah Concept
The project reinterprets the traditional Indian verandah as a multi-functional transitional space. This innovative approach combines:
- Climatic Buffer: Regulating indoor temperatures and promoting cross-ventilation.
- Social Space: Encouraging informal gatherings and community interactions.
- Corridors for Movement: Facilitating smooth transitions between different levels.

Climate-Conscious Design Features
Double-Skin Facade for Efficiency
The building incorporates a double-skin facade to balance aesthetics, comfort, and functionality:
- Outer Skin: Bent steel louvers provide shading, ventilation, and security.
- Inner Skin: Operable glazing and opaque walls allow natural light penetration, weatherproofing, and acoustic separation.
This combination ensures a sustainable environment that maximizes energy efficiency and user comfort.

Interior Spaces: A Vibrant Micro-Urban Environment
Dynamic Interior Design
The interior design simulates a micro-urban environment, with:
- Color-Coded Zones: Resembling street blocks for easy navigation and identity.
- Reflective and Raw Finishes: Creating a lively yet grounded ambiance.

Functional and Flexible Layouts
The flat structural slab and open-plan design allow for flexibility, accommodating changing programmatic needs and future adaptations.

Community-Centric Approach
Engaging with the Neighborhood
The campus is designed to serve both its students and the surrounding community:
- Children's Home: A safe and nurturing environment for orphans and at-risk children.
- Library Access: Open to students and neighborhood residents, fostering learning and literacy.
- Free Healthcare: A ground-floor clinic offers essential medical services, including consultations, testing, and medication.

A Model for Sustainable and Inclusive Design
The Divya Shanthi School by Flying Elephant Studio exemplifies how architecture can address urban challenges while uplifting communities. Through its innovative design, sustainable features, and focus on inclusivity, the campus upgrades are a shining example of modern school architecture in India.
