Reviving History: Documenta House by Estudio Palacios
Documenta House, an exemplary project by Estudio Palacios, is located in the heart of Córdoba, Argentina, on Lima Street near Maipú. The transformation of this colonial-era building integrates multiple functions — blending a family residence with a dynamic cultural space. The concept of Casa Documenta emerged during the 2020 pandemic, reflecting a growing trend where living spaces merge with creative workspaces, responding to evolving lifestyles post-pandemic.

A Journey Through Time and Space
This historic home has seen numerous transformations over the years. Originally a colonial structure, it acquired its Art Nouveau facade in 1925 and later became DocumentA/Scenic, a theater space. Estudio Palacios embraced the task of preserving the essence of the building while introducing contemporary interventions that respect its heritage.
The project aimed to restore the original spatial quality of the building while integrating a versatile program that includes:
- A main residence
- A small theater and rehearsal space
- A publishing house and showroom
- Independent apartments for the children

Architectural Transformation and Spatial Flow
The renovation involved introducing two internal courtyards by reducing the theater space, enabling better functionality and enhanced habitability. The courtyards now serve as a vital connective element between various functions of the house.
As visitors enter through a hallway, they arrive at a grand library hall that leads to the publishing area, workshop, and showroom. Large windows facing the street maintain a visual connection between indoor and outdoor environments. Moving forward, the original courtyard — adorned with a majestic ginkgo tree and climbing vines — provides access to the main residence, evoking a sense of nostalgia and tranquility.

Integration of Theater and Courtyards
The small theater, now adaptable to various formats, opens to the two newly created courtyards. Retractable gates allow the space to expand or close, creating a multi-dimensional spatial experience that accommodates rehearsals, performances, and intimate gatherings. This adaptive design approach reflects the dynamism of contemporary urban living, where spaces fluidly adapt to different functions.

Independent Living Quarters for the Next Generation
At the rear of the house, two independent living quarters have been created for the children, each with direct access to the courtyards. A shared kitchen and dining area fosters communal interaction while maintaining privacy. The thoughtful integration of private and shared spaces ensures that Documenta House continues to nurture familial bonds while offering independence.
Material Palette: Blending Old and New
Estudio Palacios carefully balanced material authenticity with contemporary minimalism. The renovation retains original elements such as adobe walls, exposed brick arches, and rustic profiles, creating a dialogue between past and present. The new additions feature smooth surfaces, a monochromatic white palette, and subtle pops of color, ensuring harmony between the old and the new. The deliberate juxtaposition of textures and materials enhances the sensory experience of the space.

Sustainability and Urban Connection
The introduction of courtyards and green elements enhances the microclimate, improves natural ventilation, and provides a serene atmosphere within the dense urban environment. These courtyards serve as pockets of greenery, contributing to environmental sustainability while enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Casa Documenta by Estudio Palacios is a masterful example of adaptive reuse, where a historic structure is transformed into a multi-functional living and creative space. By preserving the essence of the past and seamlessly integrating modern interventions, the project sets a precedent for sustainable urban revitalization. This space not only serves as a residence but also as a hub for cultural exchange, enriching the urban fabric of Córdoba.
