The Duplex Clark Residence, designed by Table Architecture, is a striking example of residential renovation and modern urban living in Montréal’s Mile-End district. Completed in 2024, this 255 m² duplex transforms a historic early 20th-century row house into a dynamic, contemporary home while respecting its heritage. Living Gallery: Adaptive and Evolving Spaces

The Clark Residence is conceived as a living gallery, an environment that constantly adapts to the rhythms of daily life. Each room offers a new perspective on the surrounding urban context, framing views through carefully designed windows and architectural elements. This dynamic approach allows residents to engage with the home in unique, intimate ways, transforming the duplex into a living, breathing space that encourages exploration and discovery. Heritage-Inspired Renovation

Located in the historic Mile-End neighborhood, the residence is part of a row of early 20th-century houses. The renovation carefully restores the original footprint, consolidating its compact, functional geometry. The design re-establishes access to the upper unit via an interior staircase, freeing the façade for heritage detailing.

The exterior showcases rusticated grey stone, meticulously cleaned to highlight the balcony, cornice, and reconstructed ornate jambs, reflecting the area’s architectural history. Meanwhile, a new rear volume and additional story are clad in standing seam zinc, a nod to local sheds and outbuildings. The “L”-shaped rear configuration creates a sequence of terraces and balconies, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces while maintaining privacy.

Functional and Welcoming Interior Layout

Inside, the duplex is organized around a central volume that divides the space while highlighting each functional zone. Built-in furniture links the different levels, connecting living, dining, and private areas aesthetically and practically. Constantly shifting views and sightlines encourage movement, curiosity, and a sense of discovery throughout the home.

The interior design emphasizes simplicity and natural materials, including wood, stone, and soft hues, creating a tactile, immersive environment. This careful combination of colors and textures produces a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the surrounding urban density.

Distinct spaces, such as the master bedroom and home office, are located upstairs. Double-height ceilings and an open staircase maintain visual connections between levels, enhancing the home’s sense of openness and continuity.
