Earth Farmhouse: Redefining Eco-Friendly Farmhouse Design
This article showcases Earth Farmhouse, an example of eco-friendly farmhouse design integrating sustainable materials and innovative environmental practices in India.
Earth Farmhouse, nestled in Jowlagiri, India, and designed by Studio Verge, serves as an exemplary model of eco-friendly farmhouse design. Situated on a 2-acre plot surrounded by natural beauty, this farmhouse combines sustainability with innovative architectural strategies to create a harmonious living space.

Strategic Location and Layout
Harnessing Natural Surroundings
The farmhouse is strategically placed to maximize the tranquil views of the adjacent reserve forest and a nearby stream. The layout includes a central studio space connected to a bedroom suite via a wedged veranda, which not only enhances the living experience but also incorporates the potential for future expansions.

Living Spaces and Outdoor Connection
The design emphasizes outdoor living, with verandas that wrap around the studio to create shaded areas, encouraging residents to spend more time outdoors amidst the natural setting.

Sustainable Materials and Construction Techniques
Foundation and Structural Elements
The Earth Farmhouse is built on loadbearing stone foundations with structural rammed earth walls and mud-plastered brick infill panels topped with a steel-framed tile roof. This selection of materials was dictated by their natural properties and sustainability, reducing the building's environmental impact.

Innovative Use of Rammed Earth
The rammed earth walls are constructed in modular sections to facilitate easy assembly and minimal waste, showcasing an efficient use of resources and reducing the construction footprint.

Integration of Recycled Materials
Creative Reuse in Construction
Recycled materials play a crucial role in the farmhouse's construction. Beverage bottles repurposed as bathroom skylights and discarded bicycle wheel axles used in window grills exemplify the project's commitment to sustainable building practices.

Local Materials and Techniques
The use of local stone flooring with broken tile chips adds a unique aesthetic to the farmhouse, further enhancing its eco-friendly credentials by minimizing transportation and manufacturing impacts.

Water Management and Landscaping
Effective Stormwater Management
The farmhouse features an integrated water management system with a constructed pond for rainwater runoff storage, which is critical in maintaining the landscape during dry periods. Additionally, the use of berms and swales helps prevent erosion and manage stormwater effectively.

Landscaping for Sustainability
The landscaping is thoughtfully designed with separate zones for a garden, a food forest, and farming areas, contributing to the site’s biodiversity and ecological balance.

Long-term Sustainability and Maintenance
Durable and Low-Maintenance Solutions
The farmhouse incorporates features like tiled walls in wet areas for easy cleaning and concealed electrical conduits to protect against local wildlife, ensuring durability and low maintenance. The concrete isolation band at the plinth level protects the earth walls from termites, highlighting a practical approach to long-term upkeep.

Setting a Benchmark in Eco-Friendly Design
Earth Farmhouse by Studio Verge not only provides a sustainable living solution but also sets a benchmark in eco-friendly farmhouse design. It exemplifies how architecture can work in harmony with the environment to create spaces that are both beautiful and sustainable.
