Site Integration – Building into the Landscape

The sloped terrain posed both challenges and opportunities. The home is carefully embedded into the land to preserve the site’s natural character while enhancing the living experience.

  • The arrival sequence begins from an elevated access road, unveiling stone retaining walls, layered landscaping, and roofs accented with solar panels.
  • The auto court is framed by bold stone masses beneath a floating pavilion roof, guiding views toward the Elk Mountain Range.
  • Stone elements anchor the north side into the slope, while the south side opens to meadows, terraces, and a custom swimming pool.

This integration creates a dynamic interplay between solid stone forms and light floating volumes, unified by sloping roofs with wooden rafters and soffits.

Architectural Expression – Strength and Craftsmanship

The design features low-slung stone masses, expansive glazing, and warm cedar detailing, creating a dialogue between permanence and lightness. Key architectural highlights include:

  • Exposed structure and natural materials that embody crafted modernism.
  • Expansive glass walls that frame mountain views and maximize natural light.
  • Deep roof overhangs that balance daylight, provide weather protection, and enhance seasonal comfort.
  • Farm-raised Port Orford Cedar, selected for durability, strength, and its warm natural aesthetic.

Sustainable and Wellness-Centered Living

Sustainability and wellness are embedded throughout the project.

  • Renewable Energy: A 29kW solar photovoltaic system with battery storage powers the home efficiently.
  • Passive Solar Design: Glazed walls and roof overhangs optimize seasonal sun exposure, capturing heat in winter while shading in summer.
  • Natural Cooling and Warmth: Exposed concrete flooring absorbs and radiates heat for energy-efficient climate control.
  • Water Features: Flowing water elements enhance sensory wellness, providing audible tranquility and visual calm across outdoor terraces.

Landscape and Outdoor Experience

Designed in collaboration with Ceres+, the surrounding landscape blends seamlessly with the architecture. Native aspen trees, stone terraces, and outdoor gathering spaces extend the living environment into nature, fostering a direct relationship between indoor comfort and outdoor serenity.

Elk Range Overlook is more than a mountain home—it is a modern architectural retreat that reflects the spirit of Colorado living. By balancing craftsmanship, sustainability, and wellness, CCY Architects created a residence that quietly integrates into its setting while offering unforgettable panoramic views of the Elk Mountain Range.
