A State-of-the-Art Educational and Research Hub in Hungary
The Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Debrecen and Manufacturing Center, designed by Pyxis Nautica, is a cutting-edge educational and research facility that seamlessly integrates pharmaceutical education with industrial-scale drug manufacturing. This project, completed in 2024, spans 7,760 square meters and serves as a pivotal space for academic and industrial collaboration in the pharmaceutical sector.

Architectural Design and Functionality
The structure comprises two distinct wings: the educational wing and the pharmaceutical manufacturing unit. The educational wing is a four-story T-shaped building with a central corridor, designed to facilitate a modern learning environment. On the ground floor, the building houses two lecture halls, each with a capacity of 100 students, alongside an atrium and administrative offices. The upper levels feature research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, a library, and a simulation plant, where students gain hands-on experience in pharmaceutical production processes.
The facility is home to the Dean’s Office and four key departments:
- Department of Pharmaceutical Technology
- Department of Biopharmacy
- Department of Pharmacology
- Department of Medicinal Plants and Drug Studies

Cutting-Edge Manufacturing and Research
The second wing of the building is a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit, designed in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and International Featured Standards (IFS). This unit serves not only as a research facility for the university but also as a hub for industrial collaborations within the health sector. The research and development laboratories focus on drug formulation and the registration of new pharmaceutical products, providing valuable industry-aligned experience for students and researchers alike.
One of the key challenges in pharmaceutical education is restricted access to real-world pharmaceutical factories due to stringent regulations. The university addresses this issue by offering controlled simulation environments where students can engage in practical learning within the manufacturing plant and cleanroom facilities on campus.

Location and Urban Integration
The building is located in northeastern Debrecen, a few minutes away from the University of Debrecen campus. This greenfield development is situated in an area that has witnessed rapid growth, with new manufacturing, office, and university facilities emerging in recent years. The industrial surroundings, characterized by anthracite-colored cuboid structures, complement the university’s Innovation Park, which is just a few blocks away. To the north of the site, agricultural fields continue to be actively cultivated, offering a contrast to the modern urban development.

Concept and Architectural Inspiration
The architectural design of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Manufacturing Center is rooted in the synergy of education and industry. The design juxtaposes two contrasting elements: the open, public-facing educational wing and the closed, industrial-style manufacturing unit.
The inspiration for the design stems from chemical reactions, particularly dissolution and effervescence, which symbolize the dynamic interaction between education and industrial application. This concept manifests in the white, foam-like upper structure, which visually dissolves into the angular lower mass, creating large openings that appear to float on the façade. The industrial wing, clad in anthracite-colored panels, blends seamlessly with the neighboring industrial buildings, while the university wing, elevated above it, exudes a more refined and detailed architectural character.

Sustainable and Functional Design
The design team incorporated sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems, ensuring an environmentally responsible and long-lasting facility. The manufacturing center and simulation laboratories provide a future-oriented educational platform that equips students with practical pharmaceutical expertise, fostering innovation and bridging the gap between academia and industry.
The Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Debrecen and Manufacturing Center is a landmark project that redefines pharmaceutical education and research in Hungary. By integrating academic learning with practical industry experience, the facility serves as a model for future university-industry collaborations. Its architectural harmony between form and function sets a new benchmark for educational and research infrastructure in the pharmaceutical sciences.
