Flinders House by Foomann Architects – Modernist Holiday Home on Mornington Peninsula
Flinders House by Foomann Architects is a modernist, pavilion-style holiday home on Mornington Peninsula, featuring timber beams, black plywood, and garden integration.
Nestled within a mature, established garden on Australia’s scenic Mornington Peninsula, Flinders House by Foomann Architects is a masterclass in contemporary Modernist design. Originally built as a Glenvill Home in the late 1980s and first renovated in 2002, this 280 m² holiday retreat has been reimagined to suit its owners’ evolving lifestyle, combining simplicity, refinement, and functionality.

The clients, including a retired architect, sought a holiday home capable of hosting family and friends while resonating with the local Modernist architectural context. Returning to collaborate with builders Fido Projects, the design team embarked on a meticulous renovation that balances heritage, modern materials, and innovative detailing.

Design & Materials The renovation draws inspiration from post-war Modernist homes, emphasizing clean lines, calm spaces, and carefully considered material choices. The east portion of the house and the ply-clad garage were lightly refurbished, while both existing and new structures share a black exterior-grade plywood finish, unifying the home across different eras.

The new pavilion-style family room introduces a Modernist silhouette, comprising two bedrooms, a kitchen, and living areas. Positioned on the footprint of a demolished section, it preserves the existing deck and seamlessly integrates the mature garden into the home’s spatial experience. Full-height fixed glazing visually connects the interiors to the landscape, allowing occupants to enjoy the garden from multiple vantage points.

Interior Experience Inside, the home is bright, open, and tranquil. Timber glulam beams run along the living area ceiling and extend beneath the eaves, subtly referencing Modernist traditions while remaining contemporary. These beams include concealed lighting and integrated downpipe openings, exemplifying the precision and care invested in the construction. The use of blackened and clear plywood throughout ensures consistency, material quality, and understated elegance.

Every detail in Flinders House reflects a balance between sophistication and relaxation. Complex junctions and refined finishes create depth, giving a home that feels simultaneously simple, grounded, and inviting.
