Nestled within a lush forested area along the historic Schiffergraben, the HBI Headquarters designed by kbnk ARCHITEKTEN exemplifies contemporary office architecture that harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings. Situated directly opposite Buxtehude’s old town and surrounded by small-scale residential neighborhoods, the building is envisioned as a “house in the clearing,” blending modern design with the tranquility of nature.

The office building occupies a 1,461 m² site and is designed as a distinctive Y-shaped volume. Its angled geometry creates a welcoming gesture at the entrance while aligning with the prominent view of St. Petri Kirche, establishing a visual connection to the historic urban context. Access to the headquarters is achieved via a bridge crossing the Schiffergraben, leading to a forecourt paved in aged basalt stone, complete with seating and bicycle parking.

The exterior design balances solidity and lightness. Generous window areas with delicate profiles punctuate the façade, enhancing transparency and visually connecting interior spaces with the surrounding greenery. Glossy glazed bricks give the façade a refined finish, while the natural landscape softens the modern geometry, ensuring the building harmonizes with both forest and town.

Inside, light-filled interiors emphasize openness and connectivity. A split-level entrance accommodates airy room heights in the foyer and meeting areas. Carefully chosen high-quality materials—including natural oiled oak, polished green-grey Anröchter sandstone, and muted white walls—create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Matte finishes contrast with the glossy exterior, adding tactile depth and subtle elegance to the workspace.

The interior layout is highly flexible, supporting diverse office configurations. From cellular offices to open-plan arrangements, the building adapts to various workplace needs. Light coves in the ceilings complement the natural illumination, while large windows frame views of the verdant surroundings and historic townscape, fostering a productive and inspiring environment. On the second floor, employees enjoy a modern kitchen, lounge, and an almost 100 m² sunlit terrace—perfect for relaxation and informal meetings.
