Healing Façade by Santruli Estudio is a powerful example of sustainable architecture that moves beyond building as shelter and enters the territory of ecological repair. Designed as the Winner entry of Eco-Chapel, the proposal responds to Ethiopia’s forest churches, landscapes where faith, biodiversity, community, and environmental memory exist together.

The project begins with a precise observation: Ethiopian forest churches have historically preserved rare pockets of native vegetation. Around these sacred sites, trees are not simply part of the scenery. They form an ecological and spiritual boundary that protects life. Humans, animals, plants, soil, air, and water are understood as part of one interdependent system.

However, unsustainable human actions, including agriculture, farming, animal rearing, and land degradation, have weakened this chain of natural relationships. Healing Façade addresses this fracture through a modular, feasible, and replicable architectural system. Instead of proposing a conventional wall, the design introduces a façade that catches water from wind and humidity, protects vegetation, restores soil, and supports reforestation.

In this sense, Healing Façade is not only an Eco-Chapel proposal. It is a living environmental infrastructure.

Sustainable Architecture Rooted in Forest Churches

The concept behind Healing Façade is deeply connected to the belief system of Ethiopian forest churches. Traditional forest churches are often surrounded by circular stone walls. These ring walls protect the sacred forest and define the spiritual territory. Healing Façade studies this existing condition and transforms it into a new architectural element.

Rather than treating the wall as a defensive edge, the project reimagines it as an active environmental device. The circular form remains, but its role changes. It becomes a façade wall that collects water, filters air, supports vegetation, and creates space for people to gather.

This shift is central to the project’s architectural strength. The façade is not ornamental. It performs. It becomes a climatic tool, a community structure, a spiritual boundary, and a reforestation mechanism.

The circular shape also allows the system to adapt to different scales. It can host small chapels, larger ceremonies, nurseries, workshops, gathering areas, and food gardens. This flexibility makes the proposal replicable across different Ethiopian contexts.

Water as a Tool for Landscape Restoration

One of the most important strategies in Healing Façade is its passive water collection system. The façade uses handmade fiber ropes suspended from a light wooden structure. These fibers catch moisture from wind and humid air through a condensation process.

Once collected, the water droplets move down by gravity and are directed to collectors. From there, the water is distributed into the affected soil. This creates a slow but meaningful healing process, where architecture helps recover the ground and make reforestation possible.

The project treats water not only as a resource but as an agent of regeneration. Through the façade, air becomes water, water becomes soil recovery, and soil recovery becomes new vegetation.

This strategy gives the chapel a climate-responsive identity. The building works with environmental conditions instead of resisting them. It uses humidity, wind, gravity, local materials, and community labor to create ecological value.

A Modular System Built with Local Knowledge

Healing Façade is designed as a self-construction system. This is essential to its social and environmental logic. The proposal does not depend on highly industrialized construction methods or imported technical systems. Instead, it uses local construction techniques and materials that communities can understand, build, maintain, and replicate.

The foundation begins with rammed earth, also known locally as taipa. This method connects the project to vernacular construction traditions and reduces dependence on heavy material systems. A light timber structure is then installed, creating the frame for the façade and roof.

The façade includes corrugated metal sheets, nail unions, light wood members, fiber ropes, gutter water collectors, rammed earth floors, steel plate braces, and cast concrete reinforced foundations. Each element is clear, simple, and assembled through an understandable construction process.

The implantation sequence is also pedagogical. It begins with foundation work, continues with the timber structure, then introduces condensation fibers, and finally supports reforestation. Every phase becomes part of a collective learning process.

Architecture as a Pedagogical Tool

Healing Façade is not only a place for worship. It is also a tool for environmental education. The design allows visitors and local communities to see how ecological systems work. Water collection, soil recovery, plant growth, and reforestation are made visible.

This visibility is important. The project does not hide sustainability behind technical systems. It exposes the process so people can understand how the façade performs. The building becomes a living classroom where the community learns through direct experience.

Workshops, nurseries, food gardens, kitchens, outdoor gatherings, and pedagogical activities expand the chapel’s role. These programs help people exchange knowledge, learn about conservation, and participate in environmental repair.

By combining sacred space with ecological education, Healing Façade creates a new model for sustainable architecture in which people do not simply use the building. They learn from it.

The chapel and prayer hall form the spiritual core of the proposal. Nearby spaces include a priest residence, storage room, outdoor gathering zones, and weekend ceremony arrangements. These areas allow the project to support religious life while remaining open to larger civic use.

Another circular structure includes a nursery, local food garden, and pedagogical workshop. This area connects environmental learning with practical cultivation. It allows the community to observe plant growth, care for seedlings, and understand the importance of native species.

A third circular space includes eatery, kitchen, washroom, indoor activity areas, and outdoor gathering spaces. This makes the project socially active throughout the week, not only during worship or ceremonies.

Through this programme, Healing Façade becomes a community hub, a chapel, a nursery, an ecological laboratory, and a landscape restoration device.

A Climate-Responsive Landscape Strategy

The landscape strategy is based on progressive growth. As the façade collects water and improves soil conditions, vegetation begins to return. This new green cover gradually shapes movement paths, gathering zones, and ecological boundaries.

The design does not impose a fixed landscape. It allows the landscape to evolve through time. The growth of plants becomes part of the project’s spatial identity.

This is a sensitive approach to climate-responsive design. The architecture does not dominate the site. It creates the conditions for the site to recover. The relationship between built form and landscape remains open, adaptive, and alive.

The project also gives visibility to non-human dynamics. Forest restoration is not treated as background scenery. It becomes the main event. Visitors can witness the progression from nursery to young plants to larger native trees. This makes ecological time part of the architectural experience.

A Replicable Model for Ethiopia

One of the strongest aspects of Healing Façade is its replicability. Because the system is modular, locally buildable, and adaptable, it can be applied across different Ethiopian territories. Each community can construct its own façade wall based on local needs, available labor, and specific environmental conditions.

This gives the project potential beyond a single site. It can operate as a community-led reforestation model, a public policy idea, and a sustainable architecture prototype for regions facing soil degradation and ecological loss.

The design can host different activities depending on context. Some communities may emphasize worship. Others may focus on nursery work, food production, workshops, or gatherings. The flexible circular system allows these variations without losing the central ecological purpose.

Materiality and Atmosphere

The visual language of Healing Façade is soft, porous, and tactile. The suspended fiber ropes create a delicate atmospheric boundary between interior and exterior. Light filters through the façade, creating a sense of enclosure without complete separation.

The use of wood, rammed earth, fibers, and simple structural elements gives the project a grounded and approachable character. It avoids monumentality. Instead, it creates a humble architecture that grows with the community.

The renderings show people walking through the façade, children moving alongside adults, artisans participating in construction, and vegetation gradually reclaiming the terrain. These images reinforce the project’s core message: architecture can heal when it is designed as a process rather than a finished object.

The chapel interior is calm and minimal, while the nursery and gathering areas feel open, breathable, and connected to the landscape. The project’s atmosphere is defined by lightness, participation, and ecological care.
