Homestead C: A Contemporary Farmhouse Rooted in the Pacific Northwest
A contemporary farmhouse by Citizen Design blending white-clad modern architecture, warm interiors, and expansive forest views in the Pacific Northwest.
Set within the dense conifer forests of Maple Valley, Washington, Homestead C is a contemporary farmhouse that thoughtfully balances modern architectural clarity with the warmth and familiarity of rural living. Designed by Citizen Design, the 4,600-square-foot residence reflects a deep sensitivity to its Pacific Northwest context, where landscape, light, and materiality shape daily life.

The exterior composition is defined by crisp white horizontal lap siding paired with white brick accents, establishing a timeless farmhouse expression. This restrained palette is sharpened by black steel-framed windows and doors, which punctuate the façade and introduce a refined modern contrast. The clean architectural lines are softened by the surrounding forest, allowing the home to feel grounded within its natural setting rather than imposed upon it.

At the heart of the residence lies the expansive main living area, where oversized glazing frames uninterrupted views of the adjacent creek and wooded landscape. Generous windows, sliding doors, and strategically placed skylights flood the interiors with natural light throughout the day, creating an atmosphere that is both bright and deeply inviting. The visual connection to nature reinforces the home’s role as a retreat, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior spaces.

Adjacent to the living area, the kitchen functions as both a social hub and a highly efficient workspace. Custom cabinetry by Bellmont Cabinets, integrated appliances, and a substantial central island support everyday use while accommodating larger gatherings. Subtle tile accents, refined fixtures, and durable surfaces introduce layers of texture and sophistication, elevating the kitchen into a focal point of the home without sacrificing practicality.

The interior material palette emphasizes warmth and continuity. Wood-clad vaulted ceilings span the kitchen and dining areas, enhancing spatial volume while drawing the eye upward. Light oak flooring extends throughout the residence, unifying spaces and reinforcing a natural, understated elegance. Carefully placed tile elements provide contrast and durability, contributing to a cohesive yet varied interior atmosphere.

Private spaces maintain the same architectural restraint and attention to detail. Bedrooms and bathrooms are conceived as calm, light-filled retreats, where wood and tile surfaces create a sense of comfort and quiet luxury. Thoughtful proportions, generous openings, and clean detailing ensure that each room feels spacious, functional, and timeless.

Complementing the main residence is a modern party and storage barn, a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional agrarian structures. Designed with an open-plan layout and double-height ceilings, this ancillary building serves as a flexible communal space for gatherings, events, and everyday activities. Its architecture bridges rustic familiarity with modern design sensibilities, reinforcing the project’s overarching theme of adaptability and balance.

In Homestead C, Citizen Design delivers a residential architecture project that seamlessly integrates modern farmhouse aesthetics with Pacific Northwest sensibilities. Through careful material selection, strong indoor: outdoor connections, and a clear architectural narrative, the home offers a refined yet comfortable environment, one that celebrates both modern living and the enduring presence of nature.
