Hotel House by Splinter Society: A Boutique-Inspired Urban Retreat in South Yarra
A boutique-inspired urban retreat blending rich materials, dramatic volumes, hotel-like amenities, and compact luxury to create an elevated, immersive South Yarra home.
Located in the vibrant inner-city suburb of South Yarra, the Hotel House by Splinter Society redefines urban living through the lens of boutique hospitality. Completed in 2023 and spanning 197 m², this compact yet luxurious residence was designed as a second home for owners who wanted to remain connected to the energy, culture, and social life of the city. More than a dwelling, the project functions as a high-end escape—merging architecture, interior design, and hotel-inspired amenities into a seamless, elevated living environment.

Conceived by lead architect Chris Stanley and built by Buildtech Projects, the Hotel House studies the essence of boutique hotel experiences. It distills glamour, cultural immersion, curated lighting, refined materials, and meticulous detailing into a contemporary residential framework. The result is a private retreat that supports brief stays while delivering the comfort and sophistication of a tailored hospitality experience.

The architecture unfolds as two contrasting volumes positioned to maximize the constraints of the site while amplifying spatial drama. A smooth, light-rendered upper volume contrasts with a richly textured dark timber base. Their overlapping geometries carve out an internal courtyard on the ground floor and create a sheltered rooftop balcony, allowing the homeowners to enjoy outdoor moments with privacy. These volumes also orchestrate double-height interiors, strategically capturing daylight and crafting dynamic vertical connections.

Inside, the home is arranged like a curated hotel sequence. A curved, tunnel-like entry corridor leads into the house, passing a dedicated bag drop before opening beneath a sculptural void. This thoughtful transition sets the tone for the experiential narrative. At the heart of the ground floor sits a chef’s kitchen and refined bar, designed for entertaining and built with precision. Adjacent to it, a flexible music and reading room can transform through a series of sliding doors, shifting between intimacy and openness depending on the occasion. Overlooking the central void, the mezzanine study provides a serene workspace, leading toward two luxurious hotel-suite-style bedrooms and private washrooms reminiscent of boutique accommodations.

Materiality is central to the project’s identity. A rich palette blends warm stones, crafted metal finishes, soft leathers, decorative plasters, glass layers, and expressive timbers. This balance of textures, colors, and light creates a sensory experience that encourages relaxation and escape. Top-lighting strategies bring daylight deep into the compact footprint, ensuring privacy while creating dramatic shifting shadows throughout the day. In the evening, atmospheric artificial lighting highlights the home’s many layers, revealing nuanced textures and washing over metal screens to add depth and warmth.
