A Second Home Designed to Embrace the Lake

House by the Lake by kaviar:collaborative is a stunning architectural project in Kamshet, India, that redefines the idea of a modern second home. Surrounded by lush greenery and directly touching the lake, the residence was envisioned not as a conventional bungalow but as a vessel for viewing and reconnecting with nature. The site itself became the primary inspiration—inviting the architects to create a series of open “viewing galleries” that frame the surrounding landscape.

The result is an experiential home that blends indoor comfort with the beauty of the outdoors, making the lake and its rippling reflections the central element of the design.

Minimal Interiors, Maximum Connection with Nature

To highlight the lake views, the architects adopted a minimal interior aesthetic. Instead of glossy finishes or bold colors, the home features an earthy palette of greys, beiges, whites, and blacks. Materials such as kota stone, reclaimed wood, concrete, and locally sourced stone create a tactile quality that feels grounded and natural.

One standout detail is the use of river-washed kota stone, whose rippled surface mimics the movement of the lake, further reinforcing the connection between indoor textures and outdoor landscapes.

Theatrical Entrance and Framed Views

The entrance of House by the Lake is designed with an element of drama. A 10-foot-tall black door conceals the breathtaking views beyond, offering only subtle glimpses of water through narrow courtyards and minimal fenestrations.

Upon entering, visitors are led through a staged reveal: a few steps guide them into the entrance foyer, where the full spectacle of the lake and surrounding greenery unfolds like a scene in a theatre. This deliberate orchestration of views heightens the emotional experience of arrival.

Architecture that Draws the Eye to the Lake

Every architectural decision in the house is oriented toward the water. The sloping roofline subtly guides the eye toward the horizon, while the open glass façade on the lake side ensures uninterrupted views from every angle.

The structure feels monolithic from the entrance side with minimal openings, but once inside, it expands into a light-filled space that opens fully to the lake. Whether standing in the living room, dining area, or bedroom, the occupant’s gaze is always drawn toward the water.

Spatial Planning Across Two Levels

The 12,000 sq. ft. home is distributed across two levels:

  • Upper Level: Public areas including living, dining, kitchen, and two bedrooms. This level maximizes social interaction while maintaining constant visual connection with the lake.
  • Lower Level: Designed for intimacy and recreation, it includes a yoga room, games room, four bedrooms, and direct access to the swimming pool, jacuzzi, and landscaped lawns.

Every one of the six bedrooms opens directly to the outdoors, creating a seamless transition between private spaces and nature.

A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Landscape

By designing with respect for site contours and natural surroundings, House by the Lake achieves a balance between architectural boldness and environmental sensitivity. It is both a sanctuary and a social space—a home that celebrates water, light, and landscape through a refined yet warm design language.
