House in Cacela Velha by GSS arquitectos: Restoring Vernacular Harmony in the Algarve

Situated in the coastal village of Cacela Velha, Algarve, Portugal, this house by GSS arquitectos represents a thoughtful rehabilitation of a 20th-century farmhouse. Originally designed for agricultural use, the structure evolved over time through piecemeal expansions—most notably, a discordant second floor that disrupted the harmony of the original building.
Restoring Volumetric Balance
The renovation sought to bring back volumetric coherence to the building. To soften the visual impact of the vertically stretched upper floor, the architects designed a pergola of pine poles supported by thick masonry pillars on the eastern terrace. This light, shaded structure reintroduces balance and integrates organically with the surrounding context.
Redesigning the Façades
On the northern elevation, once a blank and visually harsh wall, the team introduced two vertical window openings, one on each floor. These new spans visually tie both levels together and introduce much-needed natural light. The main façade on the ground floor, which had eight overly decorated mortar-framed windows, was simplified. The revised frame design—wider and restrained—respects the regional architectural vocabulary of Algarve.
Shutters, Light, and Privacy
To modernize without losing character, the architects replaced full traditional shutters with half shutters. This clever move ensures interior privacy while allowing filtered daylight and air to enter the living spaces—an approach that enhances natural ventilation while preserving the building’s identity.
Reinventing the Patio and Outdoor Experience
A standout feature of the house is the reinvented traditional patio, central to southern Portuguese homes. Here, GSS arquitectos introduced a relaxation zone and a semi-raised pool with a pond-like character, encouraging informal outdoor living. Surrounded by a masonry wall for privacy and acoustic protection, the patio becomes a serene, inward-facing retreat.
Interior Transformation and Spatial Layout
The interior was entirely demolished and reorganized. At ground level, the living room connects openly with the patio, creating a fluid, indoor-outdoor relationship ideal for the region’s mild climate. The master suite on the upper level offers generous space and direct access to two private terraces, enhancing views and livability.
A Dialogue Between Past and Present
This project is a model of adaptive reuse and culturally responsive architecture. By preserving the structure’s historical essence while enhancing function and comfort, GSS arquitectos have redefined a traditional Portuguese farmhouse for modern life, without compromising its roots.
