House of Fortune: Heritage Meets Modern Family Living in Collingwood
House of Fortune by Dean Dyson Architects blends Collingwood’s industrial heritage with modern family living, featuring open-plan spaces, courtyards, and thoughtful restoration.
Nestled in the heart of Collingwood, Australia, House of Fortune by Dean Dyson Architects is a masterful renovation that celebrates the city’s industrial heritage while creating a modern, adaptable family home. Completed in 2023, this project is a thoughtful blend of historical preservation, innovative design, and social connection, demonstrating how architecture can honor the past while embracing contemporary lifestyles.

Honoring Heritage Through Design
From the outset, Dean Dyson Architects approached the project as more than a renovation. Inspired by the clients’ memories of Collingwood’s industrial past and neighborly social connections, the design sought to capture a sense of nostalgia while enhancing functionality for modern family life. Every material choice, layout decision, and architectural element reflects this careful balance between heritage and innovation.
The home celebrates its Victorian Terrace identity, maintaining the original façade’s integrity while revealing character through subtle restoration rather than replacement. Even the adjacent garage, transformed into a street-facing entertainment space, nods to Collingwood’s manufacturing legacy with a perforated steel screen that encourages social interaction and community engagement.

Flexible, Layered Living Spaces
House of Fortune is designed as a vessel for modern family life, comprising three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a convertible entry parlour, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, entertainment bar, hidden mudroom, central courtyard, and a street-access entertainment zone.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a reimagined parlour that merges heritage charm with contemporary function. Moving through the arches of the restored hallway, the home opens into a sunlit living, kitchen, and dining space overlooking the central courtyard. Large French windows seamlessly connect interior and exterior, filling previously dark spaces with natural light and fresh air. The result is a tranquil, open environment that balances private retreats with communal gathering areas.

Social and Cultural Integration
The design goes beyond aesthetics to foster family connection and adaptability. By layering private and communal areas, the home caters to evolving family needs while maintaining strong ties to the surrounding community. The flexible design allows spaces to shift between intimate family zones and larger areas for social gatherings, ensuring relevance for years to come.

Collaborative, Community-Centered Approach
Completed during the COVID era, House of Fortune also provided employment and creative opportunities for local families, contractors, and studios. Dyson describes it as “a collaborative journey with a tenacious group of professionals,” producing a project that resonates emotionally while offering practical, sustainable solutions.
