Indie Lab Office Building by StudioSC + Base Taller – Medellín, Colombia

A Collaborative Vision for Contextual Office Architecture

Indie Lab Office Building is the result of a unique collaboration between StudioSC, based in New York City, and Medellín’s Base Taller. With deep professional and personal ties to the region, StudioSC was invited to co-design a ground-up office building on the edge of a lush natural preserve, just outside Medellín’s city center. The project embodies a thoughtful integration of architecture and landscape, creating a workplace that is both functional and visually harmonious with its surroundings.

Designing with Geometry and Flow

The site’s sharply triangular shape, influenced by setback regulations, initially presented a design challenge. Rather than conforming to rigid angular forms, the architects embraced fluidity, curving all three sides of the building. This approach established a broader architectural language of flowing, curvilinear spaces, connecting the building visually and spatially to the organic contours of the landscape.

Materiality and Craftsmanship

The material palette is deliberately simple yet refined, comprising reinforced concrete, brick, and expansive glass. The concrete superstructure provides stability and longevity, while the intricately detailed masonry work adds warmth and texture—especially in the brick vaults and exterior staircases. Floor-to-ceiling glazing maximizes views of the surrounding preserve, seamlessly integrating the lush greenery into daily office life.

Navigating Topography with Design Intelligence

The site’s steep terrain posed one of the project’s most significant challenges. By embedding several levels into the slope, the architects created partially subterranean spaces that open onto dense vegetation. Anchored by brick vaults, these lower levels become intimate, sheltered areas that balance privacy and connection to nature.

A Sculptural Core and Spatial Connectivity

At the heart of the building lies an exposed concrete circulation core along the front façade. More than a structural element, it serves as a focal point around which the layout is organized. A sculptural concrete staircase winds upward, its mass carefully balanced by a sense of lightness, creating visual and spatial connections between floors. The surrounding glass façade ensures a constant dialogue between interior activity and the exterior environment.

Balancing Permanence and Lightness

Indie Lab successfully reconciles geometric rigor with topographic complexity. By embedding curvilinear forms within a restrained material palette, the design achieves both elegance and resilience. The result is more than a workplace—it is an architectural statement that grows organically from its hillside context, harmonizing Medellín’s urban edge with its verdant natural surroundings.
