Designed by architect Michael Piche, the Island House is a striking residential project that blends modern tropical architecture with the natural beauty of Kauai’s southern shoreline. Completed in 2016, the 3,100-square-foot residence embraces Hawaiian indoor-outdoor living, creating a seamless connection between nature, privacy, and contemporary comfort.

Nestled within an eclectic and playful neighborhood, the house sits behind basalt rock walls and mature palm trees, ensuring privacy while maintaining a serene sense of place. Its L-shaped layout frames a protected courtyard with a swimming pool and open yard, making it a tranquil sanctuary for leisure and family life.

Architecture & Spatial Experience

The design revolves around the breezeway entrance, which channels ocean winds and offers a sense of compression before expanding into open living spaces above. Once on the upper level, residents are immersed in sweeping views—panoramas of the Pacific Ocean to one side and the lush inland mountains of Kauai on the other.

Wide sliding glass doors pocket into wood-paneled walls, while uninterrupted ceiling planes extend the sense of openness. These elements create the feeling of floating among the palms, blurring boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

Sustainable & Climate-Responsive Design

In keeping with sustainable architecture in Hawaii, the Island House avoids mechanical heating and cooling systems. Instead, it relies on natural ventilation, trade winds, ceiling fans, operable glazing, and louvered transoms to regulate airflow. The angled breezeway enhances air circulation while framing dramatic ocean views.

Other sustainable features include:

  • Deep roof overhangs for shade and weather protection
  • 6kW photovoltaic system providing renewable energy
  • Solar water heating system for the pool and spa
  • Durable cementitious stucco and porcelain tile, designed to withstand salty ocean air and tropical heat

This eco-conscious approach ensures comfort while minimizing environmental impact, reflecting the principles of passive design.

Materials & Aesthetic

Local craftsmanship plays a central role, with sliding glass doors and custom wood detailing fabricated by Hawaiian artisans. The materials palette—light-colored stucco, porcelain tile, and natural wood—balances durability with a clean, modern aesthetic suited for the tropical climate.

The Island House by Michael Piche stands as a testament to modern Hawaiian residential design, where sustainability, privacy, and the spirit of outdoor living come together. It is not just a house, but an immersive retreat that celebrates the essence of Kauai’s natural landscape while offering refined, contemporary living.
