A Transformational Community and Educational Hub

Designed by BE_Design East Africa, the Komera Leadership Center stands as a powerful symbol of empowerment, resilience, and sustainable design in the rural landscape of Kayonza, Rwanda. Developed in close partnership with the local community and Rwanda Village Enterprises (RVE), this mixed-use facility offers educational programs, health services, mentorship for young women, and spaces for community gatherings. Its strategic location—right across from the village football pitch—ensures easy access and high visibility, making it a vital part of daily life in the region.

Flexible Spatial Design Rooted in Community Needs

At the heart of the Leadership Center is a highly adaptable multi-purpose hall, designed to meet the evolving needs of the local population. Custom-built hinged translucent panels allow the central space to morph between one large gathering hall and up to three individual classrooms. When opened at 90 degrees, they create a spacious communal venue for meetings, while a full 270-degree opening transforms the hall into a performance or celebration space.

Integrated storage rooms provide seamless support for these modular transformations, ensuring the building is not just beautiful, but also functional and community-driven.

Cultural Expression in Form and Material

The architecture of the Komera Leadership Center is deeply inspired by Rwandan heritage. The design integrates roof geometries, woven eucalyptus screens, and locally crafted brick patterns that reference Imigongo—a traditional Rwandan art form known for its bold geometric motifs. These elements are not merely decorative; they connect cultural expression to spatial experience, embodying the meaning of “Komera”—“to stand strong and have courage.”

A generous shared roof canopy unites the different programmatic zones—including administrative offices, counseling rooms, educational spaces, and kitchen facilities—while simultaneously offering shaded outdoor areas for informal classes, breakout sessions, and community interaction.

Sustainability, Local Engagement, and Social Impact

BE_Design committed to local sourcing and workforce development throughout the project. Over 95% of the materials used in construction were procured locally, supporting regional economies and reducing the environmental footprint. Significantly, the construction process emphasized gender equity and economic opportunity, maintaining an average of 40% female labor participation and providing training in marketable construction skills, safety standards, and financial management.

The collaborative design process empowered local stakeholders from ideation to completion, ensuring that the Komera Leadership Center is not just a building—but a co-created, community-owned space that will serve generations to come.
