What was once a weathered family home has been transformed into a thriving café, showcasing the potential of repurposed spaces to create warm, inviting environments.


From Family Home to Culinary Landmark
Originally built in 1980 as the residence of a Sri Lankan judge, the structure bore the marks of time and varied use, including serving as temporary housing for construction workers. Despite its dilapidated state, The Silent Architect saw potential in the building, using its history as a foundation for reinvention.
This transformation transcended cosmetic upgrades. The design honors the building’s origins while integrating Italian aesthetics and the tropical ambiance of Colombo, creating a space that resonates with cultural and culinary significance.


The Design Philosophy

At the heart of La Luna is the essence of small Italian kitchens, where simplicity and warmth foster a sense of community. The café embodies these principles with an inviting layout featuring a central kitchen and outdoor dining spaces, creating a lively, social atmosphere.

The design avoids traditional Italian motifs like arches, instead opting for subtle adaptations that align with Sri Lanka’s tropical landscape. Features like lime-washed walls, titanium finishes, and Samara applications bring a touch of Italian refinement while staying true to local craftsmanship.

Faced with material constraints, the architects employed innovative techniques to reduce waste. Adaptive reuse practices, including retaining original structural elements, highlight the café’s commitment to sustainability and creativity.
