LAIR Restaurant Bar by RENESA: A Contemporary Speakeasy Redefined Through Materiality, Light, and Spatial Drama
LAIR reimagines the modern speakeasy with dramatic thresholds, layered materials, intimate zones, and immersive lighting across multi-level experiential hospitality spaces.
A New Vision for Hospitality in Gurugram
LAIR Restaurant Bar by RENESA Architecture Design Interiors Studio introduces a bold reinterpretation of the classic speakeasy, transforming a 4500-square-foot space in Gurugram into a layered architectural experience. Designed in 2024 under the direction of Sanchit Arora, the project reshapes hospitality design through a careful orchestration of concealment, revelation, and material contrast. Rather than presenting itself openly, LAIR unfolds gradually, offering guests a journey from light to shadow, from openness to secrecy, and from energetic social zones to intimate hideaways. This narrative-driven approach establishes LAIR as both an urban sanctuary and a theatrical exploration of contemporary bar and restaurant design.

A Threshold of Mystery and Performance
Guests enter through a striking corridor of illuminated glass bricks and mirrored planes, establishing the first chapter of LAIR’s spatial story. This glowing pathway creates an ambiance of anticipation, blurring reflections and silhouettes as visitors transition from the outside world into an immersive interior. RENESA uses this threshold as a performative gesture, where transparency meets mystery, hinting at the hidden programmatic layers within. The entrance becomes a portal—an architectural prelude that sets the tone for the experience ahead.

Raw Materiality and Grounded Design on the Lower Level
The ground level is defined by a raw, industrial palette dominated by black and grey concrete. RENESA uses these heavy tones to root the space in a brutalist sensibility, softened through gentle lighting, custom seating, and sculpted forms. The infusion bar stands out with curved, built-in seating that encourages intimate social encounters, while the adjacent cocktail bar offers a more open, animated environment. Together, these zones create a dynamic relationship between private and public atmospheres. The enclosed smoking room, crafted from translucent glass bricks, becomes a glowing chamber that filters light and perception, maintaining visual connection without compromising privacy.

The Second Level: Layered Transparency and Culinary Theater
Ascending to the upper level, the spatial tone shifts subtly through fluted glass panels, diffused openings, and a lighter material palette. This floor houses the sushi and sake bar, framed within a dramatic double-height volume that elevates food preparation into a performative act. High seating allows guests to engage closely with the culinary craft, while the surrounding dining area offers a quieter, more refined ambiance. RENESA balances openness and control, crafting an environment that feels both vibrant and serene.

The Hidden Heart of LAIR: Exclusive Private Dining
The third level deepens the project’s narrative of secrecy. Concealed near the service zones, the private dining room functions as a secret chamber—an exclusive retreat within the larger spatial composition. This room captures the essence of LAIR’s concept: intimacy, mystery, and the thrill of discovering a hidden world. With restrained lighting, warm textures, and an atmosphere of quiet luxury, it becomes the most secluded and emotionally immersive part of the restaurant.

Materiality, Craft, and Light as Spatial Storytellers
Throughout the project, RENESA employs a coherent yet diverse palette that includes glass blocks, metal surfaces, warm timber, fluted textures, and reflective elements. These materials collaborate to produce depth, rhythm, and visual intrigue. Lighting, designed by White Lighting Solutions, plays a pivotal role in shaping movement and emotion across all floors, guiding guests through contrasts of brightness and shadow. Complementary branding by Kavya Bagga Design reinforces the aesthetic narrative with understated elegance.

A Multi-Layered Architectural Experience
LAIR stands as a testament to the power of spatial storytelling in contemporary hospitality. It transcends the conventional restaurant-bar format by choreographing experiences through materiality, transitions, and the interplay of concealment and exposure. With its curated contrasts, immersive environments, and refined craftsmanship, LAIR redefines what a modern speakeasy can be—an architectural journey that invites exploration, encourages discovery, and celebrates the beauty of the unexpected.
