Macha House by Abin Design Studio: A Serene Retreat in Kolkata’s Countryside
Macha House blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design, offering a tranquil, elevated retreat amidst Kolkata’s serene guava orchards.
Macha House, designed by Abin Design Studio, is a tranquil two-bedroom weekend retreat nestled amidst the rural farmlands on the outskirts of Kolkata, India. Situated within a lush guava orchard, the project seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, offering a peaceful getaway from urban life. Completed in 2022, this elevated structure serves as a modern reinterpretation of the traditional ‘Macha’—an observation platform that provides panoramic views while ensuring safety from the flood-prone landscape.

Location and Concept
Located amidst the verdant landscapes of Kolkata’s countryside, Macha House is strategically built within a guava orchard, blending harmoniously with nature. The design brief emphasized creating a space that feels organic and unobtrusive, enhancing the land’s natural charm. Inspired by the concept of a Macha—an elevated platform often used in Indian farmlands for observation and relaxation—the house elevates living spaces above the ground, allowing residents to immerse themselves in the serene landscape.
Architectural Form and Functionality
Elevated Design for Safety and Views
Raised nine feet above ground level, Macha House serves a dual purpose. It lifts the living spaces above the flood-prone terrain, ensuring safety from potential wildlife while offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. This elevation allows for an uninterrupted connection with nature, enhancing the feeling of openness and tranquility.

Structural Framework and Materiality
The house is built on an MS structural framework, ensuring stability and durability. The design maximizes the surrounding views by placing service cores at the center, while the habitable rooms and expansive terraces run along the periphery of the floor plate. Bamboo, a locally available and culturally familiar material, is intricately woven into the structure, giving the house a rustic yet contemporary charm. The delicate bamboo weave, complemented by a traditional thatched roof, allows the house to blend seamlessly into its natural environment.

Interior Design: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Blending Tradition with Contemporary Elements
The interior design reflects a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity. Traditional wooden furniture, complemented by modern glazed elements, creates an inviting and functional space. The open-plan layout features large openings that allow ample natural light, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Soft furnishings and curated artwork add splashes of color and warmth, creating a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.
Functional Layout for Relaxation
The thoughtfully designed layout of Macha House enhances the user experience by offering well-defined spaces for work, relaxation, and leisure. The open terraces provide the perfect setting for unwinding while enjoying the panoramic views of the surrounding orchard.

Sustainability and Vernacular Craftsmanship
Eco-Friendly Material Choices
Macha House prioritizes sustainability by incorporating locally sourced and eco-friendly materials. The extensive use of bamboo, a renewable resource, reflects a commitment to reducing the environmental footprint. The thatched roof not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also provides natural insulation, keeping the interiors cool during hot summers.

Minimal Use of Metal for Sustainability
To minimize the carbon footprint, the use of metal has been kept to a minimum. This sustainable approach extends to the integration of natural ventilation and daylight, reducing the need for artificial cooling and lighting.
Exterior Aesthetics and Landscape Integration
Blending with Nature
The exterior of Macha House is a visual delight that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The interplay of bamboo, thatch, and wood complements the rural landscape, while the elevated form creates a striking yet subtle presence. The open terraces and green decks enhance the connection with nature, making the house an extension of the environment.

Bold Yet Subtle Design Language
The simplicity of the structure is accentuated by its bold form and contemporary implementation of traditional materials. This architectural language carries through to the interiors, where the detailing reflects a balance of function and aesthetics.
A Perfect Weekend Getaway
Tranquil and Functional Living
Macha House is more than just a weekend retreat—it is a thoughtfully designed space that offers an escape from the chaos of urban life. The seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, coupled with the use of sustainable materials and traditional craftsmanship, makes it an ideal destination for those seeking peace and serenity.
