MDJ House by MSSM ASSOCIATES + RSI Group – A Modern Tropical Home in Indonesia
MDJ House blends wood and concrete in a modern tropical design, offering functional spaces, sustainability, and serene urban living.
Located in Kecamatan Kebayoran Baru, Indonesia, the MDJ House designed by MSSM ASSOCIATES in collaboration with RSI Group is a striking example of modern tropical architecture that redefines compact urban living. Completed in 2022 with an area of 400 m², this three-story residence was created for a young couple seeking a unique, sustainable, and visually captivating home.

Modern Tropical Architecture with a Unique Material Palette
The MDJ House stands out through its innovative use of wood and concrete, creating a façade that balances warmth and sophistication. The wooden accents introduce a natural, grounding element to the home, while the exposed concrete provides a bold, modern aesthetic. This material contrast not only defines its architectural identity but also enhances the overall tropical character of the house.

Functional Layout Across Three Levels
The house is carefully organized across three floors, ensuring both functionality and comfort:
- First Floor: Dedicated to practicality, featuring a home office with abundant natural light, a welcoming guest room, and a garage for parking and storage.
- Second Floor: The heart of the home, housing the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The living room is designed for relaxation with comfortable seating, a fireplace, and expansive windows. The dining area encourages social gatherings, while the modern kitchen combines functionality with elegance, equipped with premium appliances and ample counter space.
- Third Floor: A private sanctuary with the master bedroom and luxurious bathroom. The bedroom opens up to serene views, offering a tranquil retreat, while the spa-inspired bathroom with a separate shower creates a rejuvenating atmosphere.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
Beyond aesthetics, the MDJ House is designed with a strong commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. It integrates high-efficiency HVAC systems and optimized spatial planning, reducing energy consumption while enhancing comfort. The house exemplifies how modern tropical homes can balance beauty, performance, and environmental responsibility.

Collaboration and Design Vision
The project involved key collaborators including S Design Contractor (interior works), Studio ASA (landscape design), and Erreluce (lighting design). Together, they shaped a residence that is both architecturally original and deeply livable.
With its innovative material palette, efficient spatial design, and sustainable features, the MDJ House represents a new standard in contemporary tropical architecture in Indonesia—a home that celebrates modern living while embracing nature.
