Mengzi NSAU Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde: A Masterpiece of Architectural Bookstore Design
This article explores the Mengzi NSAU Bookstore as a landmark of architectural bookstore design blending history, landscape, and innovation.
Introduction to a Landmark Project
The Mengzi NSAU Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde, designed by ZAO/Zhang Ke Architecture Office, is a stunning example of architectural bookstore design that blends history, landscape, and contemporary architecture. Located in Mengzi, China, the bookstore sits along Southlake, a cherished public park, on the former campus of the National Southwest Associated University (NSAU). This historic site played a key role during WWII as an academic refuge and now serves as a cultural destination.

Historical Context and Site Transformation
The original site included a series of concrete taverns and a bell tower. ZAO/Zhang Ke Architecture Office took a sensitive approach to preservation, carefully maintaining parts of the existing buildings and refreshing the facades with gray bricks. This careful balance between preservation and innovation allows the past to resonate within a new architectural narrative.

Architectural Concept and Spatial Experience
The design centers on a rolling serpentine loop that begins at the lake’s edge, ascends over the historic hall and bell tower, and returns gracefully to the lakeshore through a massive horizontal opening. This looping form invites visitors on a dynamic journey that integrates the urban fabric, natural surroundings, and architectural layers. The sequence of spaces transitions seamlessly from outdoor to indoor, offering a continuous flow that enriches the sensory experience.

Materiality and Atmosphere
The bookstore’s material palette emphasizes rough concrete and natural wood, creating a tactile dialogue between the exterior landscape and the interior environment. The roughness of the concrete contrasts with the warmth of the wood, evoking both strength and intimacy. This blend of materials enhances the architectural bookstore design by softening the boundaries between inside and outside, encouraging visitors to explore and linger.

A Journey Through Architecture and Landscape
Upon entering the courtyard, visitors are guided by an inviting ramp that leads to a rooftop terrace. Here, they are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of Mengzi and Southlake. The movement through the space—with its ascents, descents, and framed vistas—creates a poetic dialogue between architecture and nature, history and modernity.

Cultural Significance and Community Impact
The Mengzi NSAU Bookstore is more than a retail space; it is a cultural landmark. By reinterpreting historical architecture within a contemporary context, ZAO/Zhang Ke Architecture Office has crafted a destination that celebrates knowledge, community, and memory. The project honors the legacy of NSAU while providing a vibrant public space that encourages learning and interaction.

The Mengzi NSAU Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde stands as a remarkable example of architectural bookstore design, seamlessly merging heritage, landscape, and innovation. Through its thoughtful preservation, material richness, and dynamic spatial composition, it redefines what a bookstore can be—transforming it into an immersive cultural and architectural experience.
