In the heart of Asa Sul, Brazil, the Caramelo Apartment stands as a testament to innovative interior design and thoughtful architectural renovation. Spearheaded by CoDA Arquitetura, this project has transformed a conventional living space into a modern sanctuary that emphasizes fluidity, family gatherings, and breathtaking views of Brasília's horizon.

Embracing Openness and Integration

The Concept

The renovation of the Caramelo Apartment, covering an area of 178 m² (1,916 square feet), is a perfect example of modern apartment renovation in Brazil. CoDA Arquitetura was tasked by a culinary-loving couple, one Brazilian and the other Italian, to redesign their apartment with a focus on making the kitchen the heart of their home. The architects' solution was to create an integrated space that combines the kitchen, living room, workspace, and balcony into a cohesive area that promotes interaction and togetherness.

Demolishing Walls for a Unified Space

To achieve this integrated space, all original walls segregating these areas were demolished, including the removal of a restroom to expand the living area further. This bold move not only made the kitchen the centerpiece of the apartment but also facilitated a seamless flow between different living areas, encouraging engagement and interaction among the occupants and their guests.

Materiality and Light: Crafting the Atmosphere

Wood and Neutral Tones

The choice of materials in the Caramelo Apartment underscores the theme of modern renovation. Continuous wood panels in freijó wood enhance the sense of connection and fluidity throughout the apartment. This, combined with hardwood floors and a palette of neutral materials and colors, creates a warm and inviting environment that still feels modern and sophisticated.

Natural Light and Glass Partitions

Prioritizing the entry of natural light was crucial in the design process. Glass partitions, including fluted glass doors and windows for the laundry room and clear glass dividers for the workspace, ensure that light permeates throughout the apartment. This strategy not only enhances the visual connection between different areas but also contributes to the overall sense of openness and space.
